Kuwaiti, wife sentenced to death for Filipina murder

KUWAIT CITY, Feb 19: The Criminal Court, presided by Judge Abdulnasser Khuraibet, has sentenced a Kuwaiti and his wife to death by hanging for the premeditated murder of their Filipino housemaid, and ordered them to pay KD 5,000 compensation to the victim’s family.

Case files indicate the couple tortured the maid almost daily until she lost consciousness. After some time, they tried to conceal the crime by taking the unconscious housemaid to a desert area. When their son, who witnessed how they maltreated the housemaid, inquired about her as he has not seen her for days, they told him she was sick and confined at a hospital.

It had earlier been reported that police officers found the maid’s body near a horse stable. Upon further investigation, they obtained a confession from the Kuwaiti couple who employed the household helper.
Fearing that she was dying, the couple decided to take her to an area near the horse stable and crushed her body with their car to make it appear that the cause of death was a road accident.

The circumstances of the case had prompted calls for President Benigno Aquino III’s government to order a thorough investigation into the murder.

In Manila, former labor undersecretary Susan Ople had at that time said despite the confession of the victim’s employers, the investigation should also look into how the Filipino maid was deployed, and the circumstances behind her transfer from one employer to another until she was killed by her own employers.
