31 freed in bedoun protests

KUWAIT CITY, Feb 6: The Criminal Court presided by Counselor Hmoud Al-Mutawa’a has acquitted 31 bedouns who were accused of holding unlicensed demonstrations and resisting arrest.
Commenting on the court ruling, defense Lawyer Fawzia Al-Sabah said the verdict was a ‘badge of honor’ for human rights in Kuwait.
She added the community was confident that the judiciary will sideline malicious charges which were filed by the Prosecution against her clients in contradiction with Kuwait’s Constitution and international conventions to which Kuwait is a signatory.
Lawyer Fawzia added the anti-Gathering Law holds no water particularly after it was ‘declared null and void’ in 2006 through a Constitutional Court ruling.

Tribe files lawsuits: Attorney Bader Nayef Al-Mutairi representing the Al-Mutair tribe has filed two petitions with the Public Prosecution accusing MPs-elect Nabil Al-Fadhl and Mohammad Al-Juwaihal of insulting the tribe during election seminars and also during a recent TV program.
In the first petition, Al-Mutairi alleged that Al-Fadhl supported Al-Juwaihal and others the General Manager of the Scope TV and presenter of the program respectively, to abuse and insult the ‘family’, during the program which was telecast under the theme ‘Ma’a Al-Taqder’ (With Respect).
He said the actions of the respondents are capable of causing division within the society. He supported his claim citing Article 11, Paragraph 11 of Audiovisual Law Number 16/2007, as well as the provisions of Articles 209 and 210 of the Penal Code.
The second petition highlighted words spoken by Al-Juwaihal during election seminars, saying the latter incited the public opinion against the Al-Mutair tribe and Dr Obaid Al-Wasmi.

Media report denied: Attorney of former prime minister Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammad Al-Sabah, Emad Al-Seif, refuted a story published in a Jordanian daily about his client recently.
The newspaper claimed that Sheikh Nasser offers financial assistance to some newspapers and writers to destabilize the country. He described the story as concoction of lies and unfounded aimed at inflaming the country.
The attorney says he knows those behind the campaign of calumny against his client, and their backers who are within the country. He is determined to sue the newspaper over the allegation.
