Traffic Dept mulls rise in penalties

KUWAIT CITY, Jan 21: The traffic sector is currently studying the possibility of increasing fines and penalties for traffic violations, reports Al-Anba daily.
A reliable source said Deputy Prime Minister, Interior and Defense Minister Sheikh Ahmad Al-Humoud sent his comments and reservations on a study to this effect to the traffic sector and asked it to redraft the study.
The source said the General Traffic Department (GTD) recently got the approval from the Legal Affairs Department of the Interior Ministry to use monitoring cameras on roads. This would be in addition to those used for spotting vehicles that cross the speed limit and skip red signals.
The source explained that the cameras are linkeda to the Operations Room and will record violations related to skipping the red light at intersections and changing lanes while approaching the traffic light.
These cameras will monitor cars on the safe lanes and on the main streets, which witness traffic jams due to motorists who do not stick to their lanes, he said, adding the decision has already come into effect and the General Traffic Department has issued more than 7,000 citations so far.
