Expats involved as details emerge in liquor bust case Editor acquitted as Dashti appeal dismissed

KUWAIT CITY, Jan 17: Officials of the Directorate-General for Drug Control (DGDC) foiled three expatriates’ attempt to smuggle 18,000 bottles of imported liquor worth about one million dinars into the countrya, reports Alam-Alyawm daily.
Out of the three men — an Indian, a Syrian and an American - who are said to be involved in the case, only the Indian could be arrested so far.
Sources say securitymen were tipped-off that a shipment coming from a neighboring country contained alcohol and they searched and eventually found the contraband hidden in a container in Shuwaikh Port.
A security source said the American is still at large, while the Syrian left the country shortly after the arrest of his Indian partner.

Editor acquitted: The Court of Appeals recently upheld the verdict of a lower court which had acquitted Editor-in-Chief of Al-Seyassah and Arab Times newspapers Ahmed Al-Jarallah in a case filed by Abdulhamid Dashti, reports Al-Seyassah daily.
Dashti filed the lawsuit on May 10th, 2010, accusing Al-Jarallah of insulting him in an article the latter wrote on March 1st, 2010.
The defense lawyer of Al-Jarallah, Dr Bader Al-Yaqoub, said the appeal was submitted after the due time and added that Al-Jarallah did not mention anybody’s name in the article. The court agreed and demanded Dashti to pay KD 50 as defense fees.

Bedouns queried: The Public Prosecution started questioning 60 stateless people who were arrested during demonstrations in Sulaibiya and Taima last Friday and Saturday, reports Al-Seyassah daily.
Charges of participating in gatherings forbidden by the law, ignoring the instructions of the Interior Ministry, causing injuries to security personnel and damaging police vehicles have been filed against all of them.
It is reported that 12 Kuwaiti lawyers volunteered to defend the stateless people, locally known as Bedouns.

48 illegals held: Farwaniya police, in cooperation and coordination with the Ministry of Communications and Kuwait Municipality, launched an intensive campaign in the area and arrested 48 Asians for violating residence and labor laws, reports Al-Qabas daily. A security source said a number of hawkers and illegal overseas call service providers were among those arrested.

Kuwaitis swindled
: Police are looking for an unidentified person - an owner of a travel office — for swindling three Kuwaitis, reports Al-Rai daily.
The owner had booked the Kuwaitis’ tickets to a certain country and had claimed that he made hotel reservations too. But on reaching the said hotel, the Kuwaitis discovered that no reservations were made.
A case has been registered at Hawalli Police Station.
