‘Kuwait will remain democratic’ Wisdom of Amir, Constitution tied for stability
MANAMA, Dec 10, (KUNA): Kuwait will remain a pioneering democratic state due to abidance by the National Constitution and wisdom of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the Gulf state diplomat here has affirmed.
Political shrewdness and experience of HH the Amir have resulted in “re-directing political activities,” in a manner that will serve requirements of construction and development, said Sheikh Azzam Al-Sabah, in a statement to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), on Saturday.
His remarks came as Kuwaiti prepared for upcoming elections, following a recent decree by HH the Amir, dissolving the Parliament (the National Assembly) and calling for polls in two months, as constitutionally stipulated. HH the Amir issued the decree after the (former) prime minister, Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammad Al-Sabah, tendered his resignation, along with the government, citing difficulties in coordination between the executives and legislators.
Wisdom of HH the Amir and the Kuwaiti Constitution are the major reference for stability of Kuwait, said Sheikh Azzam, also stressing these bases are necessary for transforming Kuwait into a financial-commercial hub.
Kuwait shall remain a pioneer with its democratic experience in the Middle East, the ambassador said.
It presents an advanced form of democracy, safeguarded by the adherence to the constitution and wisdom of the Amir, bases of which have also bolstered status of Kuwait at the regional and international levels, he said.
He re-affirmed that the commitment to democracy and loyalty to the Amir would remain unscathed despite “the dynamic (political) activity, based on responsible freedoms, respect of opinions, also on the bases of democracy.” Kuwait, a member of the six-state Gulf Cooperation Council elects the parliament, which plays an instrumental role in examination of state affairs and administration. The country is credited for substantial freedoms, enjoyed by politicians, writers and ordinary citizens.
