Opposition MPs fire salvo at new prime minister ‘Part of corruption’

KUWAIT CITY, Dec. 3: A number of opposition lawmakers continue to express their distrust of Kuwait’s new Prime Minister, Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah, and accuse him of playing a major role in corruption as he was a member of the former Cabinet.

Veteran MP Ahmed Al-Saadoun expressed his disapproval on Twitter saying all indications point to the former Cabinet as being the sponsor of corruption in the country. As Sheikh Jaber Al-Sabah was former deputy prime minister to Sheikh Nasser Al-Sabah, Al-Saadoun said, he was partner in utilizing the country’s resources to serve the interests of a corrupt minority who’ve delayed development projects.
Al-Saadoun stated that the Ministry of Defense, which was headed by the current PM, has conducted suspicious deals through direct contracts and was part of attempts to immunize Sheikh Nasser Al-Sabah from being questioned.

Nevertheless, Al-Saadoun added, Sheikh Jaber Al-Sabah has a historical opportunity to prove his capabilities in changing the corrupt approach that was previously rampant. He said the PM can change these opinions by making sure the upcoming parliament elections are transparent and honest. Also by strictly applying the laws on those who give and take bribes and  also those who seek to tamper with electoral constituencies.

Opposition MPs also called on Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah to take up the case of multi-million dinar deposits and monetary transfers and prosecute the culprits.

The opposition expects His Highness the Amir, Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, to dissolve the parliament after the new Cabinet is formed. The parliament dissolution will subsequently lift the immunity off all lawmakers supposedly enabling the Public Prosecution to interrogate around 16-18 MPs involved in the bribery scandal as well as lawmakers who’ve stormed the parliament, according to sources. MP Jamaan Al-Harbash urged the opposition to boycott the upcoming elections if it was found that there are tampering with electoral constituencies.

Meanwhile, Shiite MP Saleh Ashour said that region is witnessing a spring of Islamite parties not an Arab Spring, with the support of the US and the blessing of Turkey. He added that, after the fall of Syria, the Gulf countries should prepare for “Constitutional Monarchies” as in the Netherlands, Denmark and Norway. Ashour also said the region should prepare for elected governments of popular democracy, as it is unacceptable the Gulf remains unchanged.

Ashour said that is illogical and unacceptable that Gulf countries interfere to change regimes in Libya, Yemen and Syria while they themselves remain inherited, authoritarian and corrupt, adding that financial extravagance does not save the region from change.
