‘Kafil’ system abolition soon Public authority ready: Afasi
KUWAIT CITY, Nov 26: The international agreements signed by Kuwait do not include stipulations mandating it to abandon certain religious tenets; hence, nobody can force it to apply provisions that contradict the teachings of Islam, reports Al-Rai daily quoting Deputy Premier, Minister of Justice, Social Affairs and Labor Dr Mohammad Al-Afasi.
Al-Afasi made the statement in response to the demand of the United Nations Human Rights Committee to cancel the sponsorship system, death penalty, polygamy and ban on homosexuality. He affirmed the ministry clarified its viewpoints during the annual assembly in Geneva.
On the cancellation of the sponsorship system, Al-Afasi disclosed this will coincide with the launching of the Public Authority for Manpower. He said the authority is ready and the vacancies have been filled but two articles of the law were referred to the National Assembly for approval, including the budget.
He confirmed the sponsorship system will be cancelled soon and the authority will be in charge of recruiting workers from abroad in accordance with the actual manpower needs of the local market. He added the authority will endorse contracts between the employers and workers, asserting the employers will not be obliged to shoulder the travel expenses of the expatriate laborers.
Meanwhile, Al-Shahed daily has quoted Comptroller and Deputy Director of the Charity Societies and Donor Organizations Department at the Ministry of Social Affairs Ahmad Al-Sane that the US Treasury Department has lauded the performance of the ministry. He said the unified accounting system has greatly contributed in improving work procedures, affirming the 10 existing charity societies carry out their duties well. He explained the ministry does not allow any charity society to engage in political activities.
Al-Sane revealed the number of charity societies declined as some of those operating earlier were found to have violated the law. He advised the societies waiting for their official recognition to follow up their case with the Cabinet.
