‘Assembly hall to remain shut until all perpetrators identified’ Foreign Affairs panel completes 13 agreements
KUWAIT CITY, Nov 20: His Highness the Amir will not waiver on the Constitution and is committed to maintaining order in the country and enhancing democracy, said MP Dr Ali Al-Omair on Sunday.
Speaking to the press following a meeting with His Highness the Amir, Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Al-Omair relayed the royal directives that stress on maintaining order in the country and upholding the Constitution. He expressed confidence that Sheikh Sabah Al-Jaber Al-Sabah will lead Kuwait to safety.
“The Amir is committed to the Constitution and will not waiver on it. He told us “protect your country” and that is by maintaining the Constitution and enhancing democracy. All authorities abide by and are committed to the Constitution,” he said, adding the meeting was very positive. HH the Amir received on Sunday at Seif Palace Speaker of Parliament, Jassem Al-Khorafi and members of the National Assembly secretariat of the fourth regular season of the 13th legislative term.
The Amir also received Deputy Parliament Speaker, Abdullah Al-Roumi, Secretary General, Allam Al-Kandari, and MPs Adnan Abdulsamad, Dr Ali Al-Omair, Hussein Al-Hraiti, Dr Youssef Al-Zalzalah. The meeting discussed the last week’s events and the new NA secretariat formation.
Sheikh Sabah Al-Jaber Al-Sabah had condemned the provocative actions by opposition MPs and protestors of last Wednesday’s parliament break-in and ordered no leniency be taken with bringing the offenders to justice. The Ministry of Interior (MoI) and National Guard have been investigating the event under the directives of HH the Amir.
Al-Omair said the National Assembly received orders from the MoI not to re-open Abdullah Al-Salem Hall until criminal investigators gather all fingerprints that identify the perpetrators. Therefore, any upcoming session will be suspended until further notice, he added.
Al-Omair said that, so far, investigators have visited the parliament’s main chamber three times. He revealed the NA has done its part by giving a report on Black Wednesday’s events to the MoI, adding the extent of damages in the hall cannot be evaluated, even though press pictures prove extensive damage has been done, and the matter will be left to the public prosecution.
On another note, Al-Omair said the Foreign Affairs Committee has completed 13 national agreements with various countries. The agreements are currently on the parliament’s agenda and include combating corruption and money laundering.
He added that MPs will request a special session to discuss those agreements, especially the one pertaining to the education and employment of people with special needs.
Meanwhile, a delegation of the Yemeni Transitional Council met with Speaker of Parliament, Jassem Al-Khorafi to discuss GCC initiative on the Yemeni crisis. Head of the delegation, Ali Ashal, said that the council requests Kuwait to increase the pressure on the current regime to leave and to request the Arab League to do the same.
