Jabbar, Amoto crowned Level O champs Calungsod/Cruz and Daraug/Eustaguio take top honors in Ladies events

KUWAIT CITY, Nov 2: Abdul Jabbar and Richard Amoto showed the class for which they are well known, full of excellent smashes and cross-court drop shots, to take the crown in the top category of the “Deck Abesamis Tournament Cup 2011” at the Handball in Kazma Sports Complex, Adailiya, Friday. While Jabbar and Amoto emerged champions in Men’s O, Marvin De Luna and Harinath Gadikota were the best in Men’s Higher A, Keisha Stecky took the title in Men’s Lower A, Noel Zagada and James Aguinado were the winners in Men’s B, Chato Gullermo and Glen Fabian clinched the crown in Men’s Higher C, Mark Delen and Alexander Belga finished on top in Men’s Lower C, Mary Grace Calungsod and Janet Cruz were the champions in Ladies B and Grace Ann Daraug with Jeanette Eustaquio took the top honors in Ladies D. This event would not have been possible without the efforts of FILBACK Founding Chairman Caloy Abesamis along with FILBACK Director Leo Regner, FILBACK Tournament Director Renato Calanog, Alpha Phi Omega Kuwait Alumni Association (APO KAA-153) and all the officebearers who consistently work hard to deliver non-stop competition for the organization’s members.

Level O
In Level O, Abdul Jabbar and Richard Amoto were required to beat Faheem Contractor and Mathew Jacob twice in the final to clinch the title because the ultimate champions had lost one of their matches in the Elimination round while Contractor and Jacob had finished on top with an unbeaten record.
Jabbar and Amoto accomplished their task in style as they won the first match against Contractor and Jacob 21-15, 21-15 before prevailing over the same opponents 21-13, 21-15 in the second game. Had the first runners-up won even one match they would have collected the crown but Jabbar and Amoto were keen to take revenge for their only defeat to the same opponents in the Elimination Round. As the results show they accomplished this in style. Due to their unbeaten record, Contractor and Jacob had moved straight to the finals from the 2nd Elimination Round while all the other players had to go through the knockout stage.

Earlier, in the semifinals, Jabbar and Amoto had thrashed Erwin Mercado and Windrow Bugas — who finished second runners-up — 21-14, 21-15.Mercado and Bugas had moved directly into the semifinals after winning two matches in the second Elimination Round. The win for Jabbar and Amoto was sweet revenge as they had lost to the losers in the second Elimination Round.
In the knockout stage, James Flores and Marianne Salunga won their first match by default before they were beaten by Joms Tantianco and Joenel Seva 21-17, 16-21, 21-16.Jabbar and Amoto also won their first match by default before they edged Tantianco and Seva 21-18, 15-21, 21-19 to move into the semifinals.
Before the knockout round, some of the players were involved in the second Elimination Round in which Mercado and Bugas beat Flores and Salunga 21-20, 21-14, Jabbar & Amoto and Tantianco & Seva won their matches by default, Mercado and Bugas edged Jabar and Amoto 15-21, 21-19, 21-10, Contractor and Jacob first tamed Tantianco and Seva 14-21, 21-13, 21-14 and then overcame Mercado and Bugas 21-16, 14-21, 21-16.

Men’s Higher A
In Men’s Higher A, Marvin De Luna and Harinath Gadikota took the title after winning the second of the final against Edward Pascual and Donald Briones 21-19, 21-14. Their task had been made difficult by the fact that they had lost the first final game 15-21, 11-21.As De Luna and Gadikota had moved directly to the final they had to win only once while their rivals had to triumph twice.
Earlier in the semifinals, Pascual and Briones had beaten Roy Satore and Tony Osea 21-18, 13-21, 21-18.
In the second Elimination Round, Pascual and Briones beat Elmer Domingo and joker(substitute) 21-13, 21-17, Satore and Osea edged Farinas and Calanog 21-15, 21-20, Regner and Delpilar crushed De Luna and Gadikota 21-13, 21-12, Millanar and Sibunga tamed Malay and Balagopal 21-20, 21-17, Satore and Osea overcame Pascual and Briones 21-16, 11-21, 21-18, De Luna and Gadikota outlasted Millanar and Sibunga 21-19, 15-21, 21-18 and De Luna with Gadikota defeated Satore and Osea 21-13, 15-21, 21-6.
Men’s Lower A
In Men’s Lower A, the pattern was the same as in the higher category with Keisha Stecky and Jiminez having to win once and Sajid Vila and Ahmad twice to take the title.
Vila and Ahmad won the first match 24-22, 24-22 but they lost the second game 17-21, 11-21 and with it the title to Stecky and Jiminez.
Earlier in the semifinals, Avila and Ahmad had an easy match against Joel Aguirre and Mark Arroyo whom they beat 21-14, 21-15 to gain a shot at the title.
The knockout stage had seen Avila and Ahmad tame Louie Manabat and Kenjie Corpuz 21-15, 21-18, Jonie Gratil and Cesar Isidro overcame Rene Anglita and joker (substitute ) 21-18, 21-19 before they lost to Avila and Ahmad 18-21, 13-21 while Avila and Ahmad defeated Aguirre and Arroyo 21-12, 21-20.
In the second Elimination Round, Gratil and Isidro beat Manabat and Corpuz 21-13, 21-17, Rene Anglita and joker won against Avila and Ahmad by default, Stecky and Jiminez outlasted Gratil and Isidro 18-21, 21-17, 21-20, Aguirre and Arroyo had a match on their hands before they stopped Anglita and joker 21-15, 21-18 and Stecky and Jiminez were stretched to three sets before they overcame Aguirre and Arroyo 15-21, 21-18, 21-17.

Men’s B
In Men’s B, Noel Zagada and James Aguinaldo — requiring to beat Cherry Manaytay and Enrique Macarangang twice to take the championship after finishing the 2nd Elimination Round with one defeat to no loss by their opponents — took the title in style by overcoming their rivals 19-21, 24-23, 23-21 in the first match before prevailing 21-19, 21-19 in the second.
Earlier, in the semifinals, Cherry and Enrique faced a tough competition from Jet Adlawan and Maher Abdul Wahab and lost the first set before they could easily win in the next two with a 17-21, 21-14, 21-13 scoreline.
In the knockout matches, Maricel Romano and Caloy Abesamis beat Brilly Lariosa and Noel Sarabillo 21-7, 21-18 while Cherry and Enrique edged past Rene Aniversario and Gomer Imperial 19-21, 21-13, 21-10.Cherry and Enrique booked their semifinal spot after stopping Maricel and Caloy 21-13, 18-21, 21-13.
Earlier in the 2nd Elimination Round, Rene and Gomer thrashed Roma Valdez and Lorry 21-13, 21-7; Maricel and Caloy overcame Samah and Danny Quindoza 21-9, 13-21, 21-15; Brilly and Noel edged Jemmo Palado and July Espiritu 21-17, 10-21, 21-13; Jet and Maher routed Arnold Abordo and joker 21-8, 21-14 and Brilly with Noel defeated Billy Ramos and Jeanette Tantianco 19-21, 21-16, 21-18.

Men’s Higher C
In Men’s Higher C, Chato Guillermo and Glen Fabunan took the title with a 21-11, 18-21, 21-11 victory over Joel Dela Cruz and Helda Morales.
With Chato and Glen having secured a direct place in the finals, Joel and Helda had to secure their spot with a 21-14, 21-20 victory over Ronilo Fuentes and Sherwin Perez.
In the first elimination phase, Rico Gabuyo and Sandy Payade beat Sunnyrae Lascuna and George Burgos 21-20, 21-18 while Chato and Glen overcame Arnel Miguel and Alex Sang 21-18, 21-19; Joel and Helda defeated Rico and Sandy 21-18, 21-18; Chato and Glen outlasted Ronilo Fuentes and Sherwin Perez 21-17, 21-20,; Glen and Chato routed Joel and Helda 21-11, 21-9.
In the second elimination phase, Alex Sang beat Sunnyrae Lascuna and George Burgos 13-21, 21-15, 21-18; Sherwin and Ronilo outlasted Sandy and Rico 21-16, 18-21, 21-15 and Ronilo with Sherwin took Arnel and Alex to task for a 21-14, 21-019 victory.
Earlier in the knockout round, Sunny Rare and George won by default; Romeo Longalong and Joey Maravillas beat Martin Vidal and joker 13-21, 21-14, 21-20; Shai and Albert Naguit outplayed Cathy Manzano and joker 21-17, 21-17; Chato and Glen outlasted Rico Canosa and Regina Casano 21-20, 21-18; Sunny Rare and George thrashed Andrei Varilla and Ayie Buenaventura 21-18, 21-16; Rico and Sandy overcame Romeo and Joey 21-20, 21-18; and Arnel and Alex edged past Albert and Shai 21-20, 21-18.

Men’s Lower C
In Men’s Lower C, Mark Delen and Alexander Belga took the crown by beating Allan Fabunan and Ely Repas 21-17, 21-20.
While Mark and Alexander had gained a direct entry into the finals, Allan and Ely had clinched their spot by overcoming Joel Conzaga and Cedric Isidro 21-20, 19-21, 21-17.
In the first elimination phase, Abdul Latif and Carlito Talampas beat Jaime and Rico Eustaquio 21-19, 21-20; Allan and Ely 21-19, 16-21, 21-15; Mark and Alexander stopped Abdul and Carlito 21-11, 21-17; Joel and Cedric overcame Allan and Ely 21-19, 21-19; and Mark with Alexander defeated Joel and Cedric Isidro 21-18, 21-18.
In the second elimination phase Rommel Torres and Carl Allison thrashed Jaime and Rico 21-16, 21-12; Allan and Ely outclassed Abdul and Carlito 21-10, 21-11; and Allan with Ely 21-17, 21-18.
Earlier, in the knockout matches, Abdul and Carlito demolished Raffy Elijay and joker 21-11, 21-9; Jaime and Rico hammered Jojo Cantero and Charles Villanueva 21-17, 21-11; and Rommel and Carl outplayed Jovie Vidal and Cal Canicosa 21-17, 21-11.

Ladies B
In Ladies Higher B, it was Mary Grace Calungsod and Janet Cruz who proved to be the best in the category after moving directly into the championship match and they took the title with a one-sided 21-14, 21-9 victory over Ayla Deewata and Ninette Regner in the finals.
Ayla and Ninette had qualified for the finals after fighting back from losing the first set to beat Maricel Ilagan and Lyn Pascua 18-21, 21-13, 21-13.
To reach the semifinals, a number of players were involved in the 2nd Elimination round in which Lyn and Maricel stopped Anna de Guino and Ma Leonor Laurito 21-15, 14-21, 21-14 while Bevs Malvar and May Comilang overcame Vanessa Hinolan and Cherry Mae Gallogo 10-21, 21-14, 21-18 before Maricel and Lyn outlasted Bevs and May 21-19, 21-14.
In the first Elimination Round, Vanessa and Cherry outplayed Anna and Ma 21-20, 21-12; Ayla and Ninette thrashed Lyn and Maricel 21-11, 21-9 Mary and Janet beat Vanessa and Cherry 21-18, 21-11; Ayla and Ninette defeated Bevs and May 21-15, 21-20 and Mary with Janet crushed Ayla and Ninette 21-12, 21-13.
Earlier in the knockout round, Rosalie Galvez won by default; Vanessa and Cherry crushed Jornette and Marilyn 21-7, 21-17; Anna and Ma won by default against Amor and Vanessa; Lyn and Pascua demolished Rosalie Galvez and Jeves Cruz 21-8, 21-9; and Ayla and Ninette fought back after losing the first set 18-21 against Dez Orbase and Princess Joy Cabanese to take the next two 21-14, 21-17.

Ladies D
In Ladies Higher D, requiring to win twice against Shelou and Jan Michael Pacasum, Grace Ann Daraug and Jeanette Eustaquio took the title in style by winning the first game 9-21, 21-12, 21-17 before taking the next match 15-11, 15-13.
Grace Daraug and Jeanette Eustaquio reached the finals with a 21-14, 21-13 victory Restine Rose Lumino and Haroun Jim Pacasum.
Earlier, in the second Elimination Round, Restine and Haroun overcame Melanie Medina and Analea Talampas 20-21, 21-17, 21-18; Joan Ilejay and Katrina Perea crushed Jing Maghirang and Scarlet Manansala 21-16, 21-6; Shelou Delen and Jan Michael Pacasum overcame Grace and Jeanette 21-7, 8-21, 21-19; and Restine and Haroun blasted Joan and Kaatrina 16-21, 21-18, 21-19.
In the first Elimination Round, Maricar Tan and Analea beat Sherlyn Gratil and Geraldine Ocampo 21-15, 21-19; Jing Maghirang and Scarlet Manansala overcame Michelle de Felipe 21-15, 21-19; Belinda Rubio and Lucille Pacasun crushed May Devine and Mags Lopez 21-9, 21-15; Joan and Katrina stopped Michelle and Eva Lanzador 21-15, 21-13; Melanie and Analea demolished Maricar and Cecille 21-12,21-12; Jing and Scarlet tamed Liza and Cecille 21-16, 21-20; Belinda and Lucille brushed aside May and Liz 21-10, 21-14 and Restine with Haroun edged past Joan and Katrina 19-21; 21-19, 21-11.
