‘Women top mobile users while driving’ ‘Raise awareness on dangerous behaviour’

KUWAIT CITY, Oct 16: Many young Kuwaiti women have admitted using their mobile phones by hand while driving; thereby, exposing themselves and other road users to danger, reports Al-Seyassah daily quoting results of a survey conducted by the Kuwait Society for Traffic Safety.

According to Dr Bader Al-Matar — head of the society, 62.5 percent of the young Kuwaiti women, who participated in the survey, said they send and read text messages, and use other mobile phone services while driving and 37.5 percent of the young men also do the same.

He revealed the respondents to the survey were selected randomly, including more than 100,000 male and female car owners. He said the survey was conducted in all areas in Kuwait throughout the month of September.

Al-Matar said the results of the survey showed that the Kuwaiti women in the age group 18-35 years old represented the highest percentage of motorists using mobile phones while driving. He disclosed the services used are text messaging and chatting through using BlackBerry, iPhone and other devices.

He called on parents and universities to raise awareness amongst their sons and daughters on the dangers of such behavior.

He also announced the society is ready to organize awareness seminars to discuss the dangers of using mobile phones while driving.

No talking on the phone whilst driving, Really?Fred Jones | 10/17/2011 10:15:30 AM The biggest joke of the year in Kuwait was when they passed the law that drivers could not talk on the mobile whilst driving. Now that texting has become popular, people have been empowered by the MOI to add that to their fine art of driving skills in the State of Kuwait. I have a novel idea, instead of bashing your women who had the blatant honesty to admit they are talking/texting whilst driving, maybe your policemen should get out on the roads and start giving tickets to people who are texting/driving on the Kuwait roads. This is the only deterrent, to this widespread phenomenon, which has gripped the Kuwait roads and is causing accidents throughout the nation. I see all nationalities engaged in these activities from the unskilled Asian truck drivers to the Kuwaiti housewives highlighted in this article. If this government does not enforce the laws, this problem will continue on the roads of Kuwait.
