2 MPs, former minister, trader in KD 87m money-wash probe Court sets Nov 1 hearing in Maimouni murder case

KUWAIT CITY, Oct 12: The Public Prosecution on Tuesday started investigations into a money laundering case, involving two MPs, a former minister and a businessman, who heads a company listed on the Kuwait Stock Exchange (KSE), reports Al-Rai daily quoting sources.
Sources said the accused allegedly received more than KD 87 million ($300 million) transferred to their bank accounts from Iran and Russia. Sources disclosed the prosecution has received highly-confidential documents, such as money transfer advices, which showed the money was transferred in batches, starting from KD 12.5 million, then KD 40 million and KD 34.5 million. Sources added the prosecution has asked the Central Bank of Kuwait (CBK) to determine the source of money.
One of the accused has allegedly tried to discuss the case with the State Security Department but he was referred to the Public Prosecution, which has jurisdiction over money laundering cases.

Hearing Nov 1: The Criminal Court has set Nov 1, 2011 to look into the case of Mohammed Al-Maimouni who was reportedly tortured to death while in police custody, reports the Freedom Journal.
Case papers show two policemen have been charged with torturing Al-Maimouni during interrogation when he was in police detention.
However, the defense attorney has requested the court to release his clients saying there is no evidence to prove he died as a result of torture by his men.
Earlier it was reported following the outbreak of the incident the then Minister of Interior had ordered the suspension of the Director of the General Department of Criminal Investigation.
The Director of the Ahmadi Investigation and Detection Department Col Adel Al-Hamdan were also referred for interrogation for allegedly providing false information based on which the Minister had issued his first statement surrounding the causes and circumstances of the death of Al-Maimouni.
A security source had said the committee which was investigating the circumstances of the incident had ordered the arrest of two officers - a Lieutenant identified only as A.A. and Lieutenant, S.A. and four other military personnel.
They were referred to the Public Prosecution for allegedly torturing Al-Maimouni during interrogation.
The Prosecution had also summoned Colonel Al-Hamdan and his assistant Lieutenant Colonel Al-Musaed Al-Adhwani to listen to their side of the story in the case.

Swindler nabbed: The Nugra police have arrested an unidentified Kuwaiti, believed to be the brother of a well-known Kuwaiti soccer player, for swindling citizens, reports Al-Rai daily.
According to reports the suspect lured the victims to invest his money with him and promised quick returns. He is said to have even given them receipts and in some cases cheques.
However, when the promises failed to materialize the victims asked for their money and the suspect reportedly switched off his cell phone.
Police then set a trap for the man and caught him in Hawalli. He has been handed over to the concerned authorities.
