Cabinet hits strikes by govt employees PM briefs govt on US talks

KUWAIT CITY, Oct 4, (KUNA): The Kuwaiti Cabinet has denounced the recent strikes by government employees, especially those that developed to confrontations, which ultimately hurt the interests of the citizens and the State.

Minister of State for National Assembly Affairs and acting Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Mohammad Al-Busairi made the statement after the weekly meeting of the Cabinet presided over by HH the Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser Mohammad Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah at Al-Sief Palace Tuesday.

Al-Busairi revealed the Cabinet stressed the importance of the statement issued on Sept 22, calling for respect of public freedom and the right to express one’s opinion, but it should not be at the expense of other people.

The Cabinet called on the government departments, which witnessed strikes recently, to take the necessary action against employees who violated the law by holding protest actions, but they have to take into consideration the workers’ demands to address them objectively and fairly.

In another development, Al-Busairi said the ministers were briefed on the letter His Highness the Amir received from Morocco King Mohammad VI, which highlighted ways of bolstering relations and joint cooperation between the two countries.

The Cabinet then was briefed by His Highness the Prime Minister on the outcome of his recent official visit to Swiss Confederation, and talks he held with high ranking officials which dealt with boosting ties between the two countries in various fields, including talks on mutual concern regarding the region and international arena.

Later, Sheikh Nasser briefed the Cabinet on the outcome of his tour along with his accompanying delegation to the United States, where he presided over the Kuwaiti delegation to the meetings of the 66th session of the General Assembly of the United Nations.

HH Sheikh Nasser stressed, in a speech on behalf of HH the Amir to representatives of the international community, importance of the role played by the United Nations and its various organizations in the face of global challenges and risks at various levels, especially political and humanitarian ones.

Importance

HH the Premier added that the importance of the United Nations has without doubt increased with time, as the international arena has experienced, during the past six decades, many events that had a direct impact on international peace and security, where the United Nations had been a safe haven for Member States to search for collective and unified solutions to face problems and crises.

The Cabinet then was briefed by HH the Prime Minister on the result of meetings he had with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, in addition to his attendance at the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) which included many leaders.

Washington was the last stop HH the Prime Minister’s tour, where he met at the White House with Vice-President of the United States, Joe Biden, and discussed issues of common interest, particularly with regard to the security of Kuwait and the Gulf region.

The Cabinet was then briefed about discussion between HH Sheikh Nasser and Biden regarding the issue of Kuwaiti detainees at Guantanamo, stressing that this case is of great importance to the Kuwait government, also noting on his call to US Secretary of State to exert efforts to ensure the release of Kuwaiti detainees, expressing the country’s readiness to provide all the necessary assurances on such case.

HH Sheikh Nasser tackled the outcome of his meeting with US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Michael Mullen, during which they focused on the military cooperation between Kuwait and the United States, and the security of the Arabian Gulf region in general.
