Nobody involved in money laundering, says govt ‘No overseas transfers in the suspicious accounts’

KUWAIT CITY, Sept 30: The government has conveyed a message to the National Assembly, assuring that nobody was involved in money laundering activities and that the money deposited in some accounts came from known sources, Al-Watan Arabic daily quoted a parliamentary source as saying.

Kuwait is completely free of money laundering activities since there were no overseas transfers in the suspicious accounts, the source said, adding the step of reviewing suspicious accounts, which some banks took, was a compulsory procedure they had to take to save themselves from the penalties of the Central Bank of Kuwait (CBK). The banks are reviewing all inflated accounts, not just the accounts of lawmakers, he noted.
Meanwhile, MP Khaled Al-Adwa said some individuals have been receiving money from outside the country “to burn Kuwait and keep it inside the circle of escalation.” He added that some people are not courageous enough to face facts and that they make up imaginary stories to avoid confrontation.

Furthermore, MP Dr Faisal Al-Muslim submitted a parliamentary query to Finance Minister Mustafa Al-Shamali, asking about the millions of dinars that enter Kuwait daily and expressed fear that they might be used for money laundering operations. The lawmaker suggested that conditions and regulations be framed for allowing such huge sums of money into the country.

Speaking on the issue of some lawmakers’ resignation from the National Assembly, a reliable source said eight MPs might submit their resignation, but the plan is tentative and that they will take a lot of things into account before taking the final step. The source added that the resignation will be the beginning of a public movement that will be launched to pressurize the parliament and the government.
