Kuwait suspends jail terms for TV attack royals Fired on Scope
KUWAIT CITY, Sept 26, (AFP): Kuwait’s lower court has sentenced three ruling family members to three months in jail each for attacking the offices of a private satellite television channel, a newspaper reported on Monday.
But the court told the men to pay KD 1,000 ($3,636) each to suspend the jail term, the Al-Anbaa newspaper said, citing court documents. The ruling can still be challenged.
The men were convicted of firing shots at SCOPE TV in October last year and of causing damage to its offices and equipment after the channel aired a programme deemed offensive to the ruling Al-Sabah family.
Al-Rai said the court was presided over by Judge Khaled Al-Omairah and the three Sheikhs who had been sentenced were Sheikh Abdullah Al-Malek Al-Sabah, Sheikh Nawaf Al-Malek Al-Sabah and Sheikh Malek Al-Malek Al-Sabah.
According to case papers scores of people stormed the channel following a program telecast by the channel and produced by Fajr Al-Saeed.
