‘KD 52.5 million in accounts of 6 MPs’ ‘Money paid as compensation for supporting govt’

KUWAIT CITY, Sept 12: The National Bank of Kuwait (NBK) has reportedly submitted money transaction details of five lawmakers who have accounts in the bank to the Public Prosecution to help it in its investigations on what was recently published by some newspapers that millions of dinars had been deposited into the accounts of lawmakers by unknown sources, reports Al-Shahed daily.

Sources close to Al-Shahed daily said a total of KD 52.5 million has been deposited into the accounts of six Members of Parliament and not KD 25 million as had been reported earlier.

Five of these MPs have an account with the National Bank of Kuwait and the sixth the Commercial Bank of Kuwait (CBK). The daily did not disclose the names of the MPs.

Giving a breakdown the daily said KD 17 million, KD 10 million, KD 8 million, KD 7 million and KD 6.5 million have been deposited into the account of five MPs who have account in the NBK and KD 4 million into the bank account of the sixth MP who has an account in the CBK.  The daily added the money was paid as ‘compensation’ for the MPs for supporting the government during a vote. The issue has sparked a big controversy and cross accusations.

The sources say the money has been deposited into the accounts of these MPs without supporting documents or clear to determine the source and the nature of this deposit.

The sources also say a major political crisis is looming on the horizon and the next few days may even lead to the dissolution of the National Assembly and resignation of the government.

Meanwhile, several economists have voiced their concern and called on the concerned authorities not to involve banks in political conflicts. The economists say the Central Bank of Kuwait has a key role to play.
