‘Govt should not disregard MPs request to hold session on KD 25m’ Finalize anti-graft, assets declaration draft bills: Jowhar
KUWAIT CITY, Sept 7: The government should not disregard the request of some lawmakers to hold an emergency parliamentary session to discuss the scam involving millions of dinars, says MP Dr Jamaan Al-Harbash.
Al-Harbash pointed out it seems the government is not serious in its bid to clarify allegations that KD 25 millions have been deposited into the accounts of some lawmakers. He expressed disappointment over the government’s claim that the Central Bank of Kuwait (CBK) has no power to look into the accounts of lawmakers. “If this is true, why does the bank monitor the accounts of charity organizations? Maybe the government is trying to protect some ministers who might be involved in the scam. It should attend the emergency session, otherwise, we will be forced to take to the streets to air our grievances,” he added.
In a related development, a total of 22 lawmakers, including Abdulrahman Al-Anjari, Saleh Al-Mullah, Hassan Jowhar, Al-Saifi Mubarak Al-Saifi and Hussein Al-Huraiti, have so far signed the emergency session request, which requires 33 signatures to pass.
Ratified
Al-Mullah asserted he had no qualms in signing the request but he believes the session will not yield the desired results unless the anti-corruption bill is ratified. “We cannot determine the magnitude of corruption in the legislative and executive authorities without looking into the accounts of the members,” he argued.
Meanwhile, Jowhar asked his colleagues in the Legal and Legislative Affairs Committee to finalize the anti-corruption and assets declaration draft bills prior to the session.
On the other hand, Huraiti, who heads the panel, confirmed the anti-corruption bill will be discussed on Sunday, indicating the other important proposals include the assets declaration, protection of informants, conflict of interest, establishment of a public authority for integrity and accountability, and discovery of ill-gotten wealth. He hopes for quorum in Sunday’s meeting to complete deliberations on these important bills to eliminate corruption.
“We wish the emergency session will douse tension and clear suspicions on the legislative institution. The concerned authorities must play their role efficiently, particularly the strict implementation of laws to combat corruption and protect the reputation of Kuwait,” Huraiti added.
