MP threatens to grill finance minister over KD 25mn issue Govt may face no-confidence motion in next legislative term

KUWAIT CITY, Aug 25: The government might face a no-confidence motion in the next legislative rou-nd, considering the escalating tension between the legislative and executive authorities, reports Al-Dar daily quoting MP Naji Al-Abdu-lhadi.
Al-Abdulhadi has threatened to grill the minister of finance at the beginning of the next legislative round if he fails to respond to questions on the millions of dinars deposited in the accounts of some lawmakers.  He stressed the need to reform the banking sector and enact the anti-money laundering law. He also asked the Central Bank of Kuwait governor to explain the matter and take legal action if it is true.
Meanwhile, Al-Anba daily has quoted political activist Khalil Ibrahim Al-Shimmari as saying that the ratification of the assets declaration bill is required to protect public funds and combat corruption.  He pointed out the politicians, who amass wealth within a short period, has no explanation for their wealth other than the sale of their conscience.  He appealed to the parliamentarians to absolve themselves through the enactment of the law to close the door of bribery and eliminate the rotten system.
In the meantime, there are indications the country in a matter of days will witness series of scandals on multimillion dinar contracts awarded to some companies owned by specific lawmakers or their relatives, seeing they didn’t meet the slated criteria, reports Al-Moustaqbal daily.
A source said the companies won the contracts as payback for stances the concerned lawmakers took on some issues or roles they are expected to play in the next parliamentary term. He added one of the contracts had been awarded by a technical ministry in 2010, while the other contracts were exposed to the parliament and media through competitors with lower quotations and better specifications during the bidding.
The source stressed that former senior officials who feel betrayed by the government will also spill the beans, and noted the Development and Reform Bloc has been preparing to grill HH the Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammed Al-Sabah on the millions of dinars accumulated in the bank accounts of some MPs.
He affirmed that the majority lawmakers will support the grilling unless the government presents convincing evidence and documents to clear its name. The lawmakers will take a different stand in this matter, and the government will be dismissed at the beginning of the next parliamentary session because of administrative and financial corruption, the source indicated.
