Chaos as police foil ‘suicide’ bid by 8 inmates at Talha jail

KUWAIT CITY, Aug 15: Securitymen at the Talha Deportation Detention Center foiled the attempt of eight inmates - seven Egyptians and a Saudi national - to commit mass suicide.

Sources revealed some inmates on Monday planned to commit mass suicide. About 400 prisoners in three detention cells embarked on a noise barrage until the securitymen intervened and caught the eight inmates preparing for the mass suicide with ropes tied to their necks.

These inmates were referred to the concerned security department for the necessary legal action. The securitymen managed to control the chaotic situation in the three cells, while four ambulances were on standby to take the injured to Farwaniya and Mubarak Al-Kabeer hospitals, sources added.

According to another source, the protesters demanded for their release as they have spent three years in detention and no procedure has been taken for their deportation. He said some of the inmates have obtained loans from various companies and it is unfair to deport them before the relevant courts rule on their cases.
Meanwhile, Assistant Undersecretary for Special Security Affairs General Sulaiman Al-Fahad, other senior officials at the Prisons Security Department and Egyptian Embassy Consul Salah Al-Wusaimi visited the Deportation Detention Center early morning Monday to personally look into the situation. The officials listened to the demands of the protesters and asked for their files to pave the way for solving their problems.

Reports obtained from the Security Information Department revealed that the securitymen were on top of the situation and everything went back to normal within a short span of time. It has also been reported that those who tried to commit suicide used the cover of their mattresses to make the ropes they tied to their necks, while others attacked the securitymen.
