‘Forgotten’ detainees of Deportation Centre plead for mercy Dire situation at Talha forces prisoners to threaten suicide
KUWAIT CITY, Aug 14: Inmates at the Deporta-tion Centre, also known as Talha Prison, have clearly described their ordeal inside the prison as many of them have exceeded their stipulated detention periods by years, and are consequently left in limbo, reports Al-Seyassah da-ily.
Some inmates at the prison through phone calls they made to Al-Seyassah have threatened to commit suicide if their pleas are not heeded. They complained that the deportation prison was supposed to host them until their deportation or release. However, the detainees said there are inmates who have spent three or four years without receiving any updates on the status of their cases. The inmates who threatened to commit suicide have reportedly pleaded with the Minister of Interior to intervene and reveal their files to pave the way for their deportation, according to laws of the land.
Al-Seyassah was also informed that the prison is a potential source of unneeded international embarrassment for the country, since many of the detainees have gone on hunger strike to voice their grievances.
Also, informed sources said the issue baffles the embassies in Kuwait, as their attempts to intervene and release their nationals from the prison are doomed. Sources complained about the trivial reasons that could send people to the prison.
