Kuwait ‘looking’ at taxes in next year’s budget World Bank help sought

KUWAIT CITY, Aug 13: The Kuwaiti government intends to include taxes in the upcoming budget, reports Al-Watan Arabic daily quoting a reliable source.

The source disclosed the government is studying the possibility of imposing income and value added taxes.  He said the government has sought assistance from the World Bank on tax-related issues, mechanism for tax collection, and ways to include taxes in next year’s financial plan.

The source added the World Bank has started conducting training courses for the concerned workers at the Ministry of Finance in preparation for the approval of the tax draft bill.  The government will also launch media campaigns to raise awareness on tax collection and focus on obtaining support from the majority in the Parliament to push for the ratification of the bill.  However, the source did not mention other details, such as the target date of implementation and the categories of people or firms which will be required to pay the income tax.

Agreed!Excalibur | 8/15/2011 2:32:48 AM strongly agree with Nik, Mohammed & Roland... Please think wisely o' Rulers of Kuwait.. You don't need World Bank in the picture. Allah has blessed you with abundant oil revenues...
Unless they perform..no VATNick P | 8/14/2011 7:49:45 PM If they want to tax foreign businesses in Kuwait, they will only head to the door because the difficulties in doing business in Kuwait are not even worth it and if they want to place VAT on foreigners you will only see a mass exit of foreigners out the door because the majority of foreigners are below minimum wage compared to any civilized nation. If they want to place VAT on Kuwaitis there will be mass demonstrations in the streets. If they want to impose VAT on this nation, then they better evaluate their failing role in this society and figure out how to pick up the trash, repair a decaying city, increase infrastructure projects like a major airport, ports, and increase the standard of living in the country which most times mirrors a guetto scenerio in most large western cities. There is no tourism in Kuwait and VAT is imposed in tourist generated economies. Where is all the oil revenues going - it certainly has not gone into the infrasturcture for many years. This country is far from imposing VAT on residents unless they perform their proper role in society.
Uncalled forMohammed | 8/14/2011 2:53:31 PM First of all, let us not forget the fact that the countries belonging to the GCC are tax exempted countries and it doesn’t make any sense when Kuwait adopts a different path of its own because of manipulative interests posed by The World Bank which is controlled by the 5 main world powers who are only interested in furthering their selfish interests and to keep the investors away from the Middle East which is where the bulk of all world revenue lies due its abundant oil reserves. This has been the policy of the West since the very beginning. Kuwait had been successfully maintaining a steady course of financial stability and prosperity since independence. And this has been achieved not by the imposition of any taxes as Allah had been gracious to Kuwait and to the other states of the GCC till date by safeguarding her oil reserves, human resources and internal stability. If we are thinking about taxes, the people of Kuwait both nationals and foreigners are already paying numerous government fees which has been hiked up after the Iraqi invasion. Examples are Yearly Health Insurance Fees (from which no insurance has been availed by any expatriate since date) Visa fees, Visit Visa Fees, Yearly Dependant Visa Fees, Commercial Visa Fees, Hospital Fees, Hiked up bus fares, Exorbitantly high food prices, Electricity Bills, other Government related fees, etc. etc. And Kuwait has been obtaining insurmountable revenue from these fees till date. Nobody can understand why Kuwait needs more money when it is already tremendously rich from abundant oil revenues and by these government imposed fees. And taking into consideration, the very volatile situation pervading all over the Arab world, I highly advice the Kuwait parliament to avoid listening to the voice of the devil which is the West and to focus on improving its already proven paths to success in all areas of socio-economical, financial and political sectors.
...Roland | 8/14/2011 12:15:07 PM Quote: "the categories of people or firms" huh? There's another tip of discrimination. Taxes must be paid by everyone in base of their benefits if companies and salaries if people...like everywhere else that have taxes!! If this isn't done...problems will surge very fast...
