MPs plan to grill PM if session on students’ problem bears no fruit
KUWAIT CITY, Aug 11: Some lawmakers intend to submit a grilling request against HH the Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser Mohammad Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah in case the proposed emergency parliamentary session on the admissions problem at Kuwait University does not yield the desired results, reports Al-Shahed daily.
MP Musallam Al-Barrak has derided the government for its failure to quickly find solutions to the problem. He pointed out the University Council has no intention to do justice to the students, who have been denied admission to the university despite meeting the conditions. He said Minister of Education and Higher Education Ahmad Al-Mulaifi has yet to present solutions to the problem, asserting the government is weak and it lacks the ability to address vital issues.
“Apparently, the government cannot manage national affairs. It has done nothing but to manipulate the policies and go around the law without taking into consideration the importance of ensuring justice for all. I challenge anyone to present proof that the government has achieved anything since its formation,” the lawmaker added.
Al-Barrak lamented the government’s performance has gone from bad to worse in the last six years. He said the government cannot boast of any achievement and most of its members were appointed through the use of influence.
Meanwhile, MP Waleed Al-Tabtabaei is of the view that the government is suffering from bad planning as is evident in its failure to implement its development projects. “If the government can find ways to admit the students in the second semester, why not do it now? Why leave the students hanging in the balance for half of the academic year? It is better to give them seats at the university now rather than making them wait for one semester,” he suggested.
MP Hussein Al-Huraiti says the government’s failure to address the admissions problem at the university only entails lack of cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education. He urged the premier to look into the issue, find appropriate solutions and prevent its recurrence in the future.
Meanwhile, the Cabinet has extended the grace period for public utilities to stay in their current locations in Shuwaikh until 2013, reports Al-Shahed daily quoting sources.
Sources confirmed the public utilities will be asked to abandon their current locations after the deadline in line with the recommendation of the Public Services Committee. Sources said the committee deems it beneficial for the country if the plots occupied by the public utilities are offered for sale with estimated revenues of KD 50 million. Sources added several authorities and public utilities still occupy plots in North Shuwaikh even if they have branches or offices in other areas.
