Saudis continue WCup good run Spain, Nigeria qualify for 2nd round ARMENIA, Colombia, Aug 4, (AP): Saudi Arabia trounced Guatemala 6-0 on Wednesday to win its second consecutive match at the Under-20 World Cup, securing a second-round spot. Saudi Arabia have six points from two matches in Group D. Striker Yahya Dagriri opened the scoring for Saudi Arabia in the 17th minute and Alfahmi Yasir doubled the lead in the 27th at the Centenario stadium in Armenia. In the second half, Mohammed Alfatil scored in the 58th, Yasir Alshahrani in the 66th, Ibrahim Alibrahim in the 83rd and Salem Aldawsari in the 89th.
Guatemala, which lost their opening game 5-0 to Nigeria, were eliminated from competition.
“We were nervous after the first goal and missed too many passes,” Guatemala’s Paraguayan coach Ever Almeida said. “It was an honor to come here. The players did everything possible, but football is more than just heart.”
Substitutes Sergio Canales and Alvaro Vazquez scored second-half goals to help Spain defeat Ecuador 2-0 and advance to the second round.
Canales scored from close range after striker Cristian Tello stole a ball on the left side and cleared two defenders before making a low cross to the Real Madrid playmaker near the penalty spot in the 67th. Vazquez sealed victory in a breakaway in the 85th, beating a defender and scoring easily from in front of the goal.
Spain struggled in the first 30 minutes but slowly picked up the pace to dominate the match at the Palogrande stadium. It improved even more when Canales replaced Daniel Pacheco in the 56th, giving the Spaniards more offensive power.
Spain will close group play against Australia and Ecuador will play Costa Rica.
Canales easily scored after Tello took advantage of a defensive mistake by Ecuador and set up the opening goal. Canales then fed Vazquez with a nice through ball for the second goal, and the Espanyol striker didn’t have problems with only the goalkeeper to beat inside the penalty box.
One of the top title favorites, Spain had opened with a 4-1 win over Costa Rica. Ecuador opened with a 1-1 draw against Australia.
It was Ecuador which threatened most early in Wednesday’s match, while the Spaniards relied mostly on counterattacks.
Ecuador had one of the match’s best chances in the 28th when Mario Pineida’s dangerous cross from the right wing just missed a couple of strikers in front of the net. Midfielder Fernando Gaibor finished with the ball inside the area, but his shot was blocked.
Spain had a goal disallowed for offside in the 34th, and in the 40th Tello had the team’s first significant chance by clearing a defender inside the area and firing a low cross shot that just missed.
It was striker Rodri who came close for Spain in the 50th, sending a hard shot that prompted a difficult save by Ecuador goalkeeper John Jaramillo at the near post. Jaramillo made another save after Isco’s long-range shot just three minutes later.
Ecuador replied with a close-range by striker Marlon de Jesus in the 64th, forcing goalkeeper to Fernando Pacheco to make a difficult save.
It was Ecuador’s last dangerous chance, though, as Spain broke the deadlock soon after.
Substitute striker Uche Nwofor scored two second-half goals to help Nigeria defeat Croatia 5-2 and clinch a berth in the second round.
Nigeria have a perfect six points from two games in Group D, along with Saudi Arabia.
Striker Olarenwaju Kayode scored in 25th minute and defender Terna Suswan in the 30th to give Nigeria an early advantage at the Centenario stadium. Ivan Lendric put Croatia on the board in the 42nd before Nigeria sealed the victory with Ahmed Musa in the 62nd and Nwofor in the 69th and 73rd minutes.
Croatia and Guatemala have both lost their opening two games.
Defender John Ruiz scored a 72nd-minute winner to give Costa Rica a 3-2 victory over Australia on Wednesday, boosting their chances of reaching the second round of the Under-20 World Cup.
Costa Rica’s first victory in the tournament allowed than to jump to second place in Group C, three points behind Spain. Australia and Ecuador remain with one point each after two matches.
Striker Joel Campbell opened the scoring for Costa Rica in the 22nd minute at the Palogrande stadium. Tommy Oar equalized for Australia in the 26th, but Campbell netted again a minute later. Australia evened the match with an own goal by defender Franciso Calvo in the 64th, but Ruiz’s header off a cross by Campbell gave Costa Rica the victory.
“It was a very difficult match, very intense,” Costa Rica coach Ronald Gonzalez said.
Australia have the difficult task of trying to beat Spain on Saturday to reach the knockout stage, while Costa Rica will play Ecuador.
“We let this one get away,” Australia’s Dutch coach Jan Versleijen said. “We will have to get a good result against Spain, there is no alternative. It’s going to be hard, no doubt. Spain is the best team in the group, but we are not giving up yet.”
