‘Arab govts, League must act to stop Syrian regime’s atrocities’ Need to respect rights of protesters: KHRS KUWAIT CITY, Aug 3: The Arab governments and the Arab League must take concrete steps to stop the atrocious acts of the Syrian regime against its own people, says the Kuwait Human Rights Society (KHRS).
In a press statement Wednesday, the society appealed to the Arab League to put pressure on the Syrian regime to respect the rights of demonstrators, listen to the demands of the people, and implement genuine reforms to regain its political legitimacy. The society also stressed the need for the regime to grant the protesters’ request for change in line with the principles of multiplicity, democracy and peaceful dialogue.
According to the society, it is now time for the Arab governments and the Arab League to seek the assistance of the international community in laying down effective mechanisms to protect the civilians from the oppressive Syrian forces, especially after what happened in Hama recently. Armed with heavy weapons, the security forces stormed the city and killed 130 innocent individuals in just one day.
The Kuwaiti government, parliament and civil societies must take a strong stand to support the defenseless Syrians and protect them from the tyrannical acts of the regime. The Kuwaiti government should take the required procedures, in accordance with the international regulations, to punish the Syrian regime. On the other hand, the civil societies and other organizations in the country must take serious steps to protect the Syrians, who have been holding demonstrations since the middle of March to demand change and stop the atrocious acts of the repressive regime, said the society.
It is worth mentioning that the Syrian demonstrations have, so far, caused the death of 1,500 people; injuries to several others; and imprisonment of 10,000. These figures are expected to increase daily unless the proper steps are taken to stop the horrible acts of the regime. Amidst the chaos in Syria, it is disheartening that the Arab League and the Arab countries have opted to remain silent, the statement added.
