Ministry acts to ‘control’ prices Co-ops hold sales festivals KUWAIT CITY, July 29: Sales festivals which promote Ramadan commodities incite competition among the cooperative societies and reduce the burden on people, considering the high standard of living in recent times, reports Al-Watan Arabic daily quoting a senior officer.
Undersecretary at the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor Dr Mohammed Al-Kandari added the ministry is keen on controlling prices.
Speaking to reporters at the inauguration of Ramadan festivals in Mubarak Al-Kabeer and Al-Qurain Cooperative Societies, Al-Kandari said Al-Qurain Co-Society maintained its goal of offering the best prices for the commodities. Also present at the event was the Assistant Undersecretary for Cooperatives Sector Dr Jassem Ashkanani.
Meanwhile, Dr Ashkanani stressed the significance of sales festivals and added the ministry is concerned about the health of citizens and residents. He noted the ministry, in coordination with the relevant authority, will initiate inspection campaigns at the cooperative societies to ensure the validity of commodities.
He reiterated the board of cooperative societies will not allow the sale of rotten foodstuffs inside the coop-societies.
The chairperson of Cooperative Societies Union Dr Hussein Duwaihes said studies have been conducted on the prices of commodities in various cooperative societies, besides the weekly tour of the markets by inspectors to monitor the prices.
He stressed the Ministry of Commerce spares no effort to compare the prices of foodstuff in the country with those of the other GCC states.
