‘No spoilt food reaches public’ Govt concerned: minister

KUWAIT CITY, July 27, (Agencies): Director General of Kuwait Municipality Ahmad Al-Subeeh asserted that all spoilt food traders are being pursued and all bad food unfit for human consumption is being destroyed, denying claims of any leakage of seized food items.
Speaking to KUNA on Wednesday, Al-Subeeh noted that the municipality will ensure that the upcoming holy month of Ramadan will be “free of any spoilt food items.” “Kuwait municipality is serious about blocking entry of any food unfit for human consumption through conducting heavy monitoring and on-going inspection campaigns,” he pointed out.
He explained that seized bad food items are being destroyed at landfill sites off of 6th ring road throughout the whole week, encouraging media outlets to attend these destruction operations to negate claims saying that the municipality is “not doing its job properly.” He noted that there are strict procedures that are being followed when seizing bad food, explaining that there is cooperation among the Municipality, the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Commerce on this regard.

Minister of Commerce and Industry Amani Buresli said the government is deeply concerned about the issue of spoilt foodstuff. This is why the government has directed the ministry to give incentives to inspectors and other employees at the sector to encourage them to perform better, reports Al-Seyassah daily.
In a statement at the opening of Shamiya market, the minister said more inspectors would be assigned and motivated to monitor the markets, particularly in Ramadan. On the issue of hoarding the basic commodities, Buresli said there is a law that forbids hoarding, which will be effected soon.

In another development, even stray dogs allegedly refused to eat the meat which was destroyed by personnel from the Kuwait Municipality, reports Al-Shahed daily.
It has been reported when officials from the Kuwait Municipality were destroying 80 tons of confiscated spoiled foodstuffs a stray dog happened to grab a chunk of meat. After sniffing the ‘free’ meal, the dog reportedly walked away.
And in spite of a statement issued by the Director-General of the Kuwait Municipality concerning people involved in selling spoiled foodstuffs, one of the Asian suspects involved in the scam is said to have left the country, reports Al-Shahed daily.

According to a reliable source the Kuwait Municipality had reportedly confiscated 17 tons of spoiled foodstuff from the store of the suspect, who, during interrogation had admitted that the foodstuffs belonged to him.
He even signed a document promising to present himself when called for interrogation by the concerned authorities.
The source added the Kuwait Municipality has no authority to ban people from traveling and due to lack of coordination with the Ministry of Interior, the man is said to have escaped from the country.
