Kuwait and Philippines players fight for control of the ball.
Kuwait top Azkals 3-0 in Cup qualifier China, Iran, Qatar win encounters KUWAIT CITY, July 23: Kuwait beat Philippines 3-0 in a heavily one-sided world-cup qualifying match Saturday at Qadsiya Sports Club, denying the visitors a chance to take control of the match at any stage. The visitors will face Kuwait again in a second leg match in Philippines on July 28, and will be going with a rock bottom morale. After an initial sally at fight, the Philippines displayed a serious lack of confidence with half hearted shots miles away from the target. Yusuf Nasser opened the account for Kuwait in the 17th minute heading a beautiful pass by Enezi into the Philippines net beating the goalkeeper by yards. Philippines attempts at reply left much to be desired. Kuwait controlled the ball for the most part. The closes that the visitors came to answering the first humiliation was a top angled missile that was clipped away by the goalkeeper just in time.
With the hosts dominating, and the visitors seemingly restrained, there weren’t many yellow cards flashed. Hussein Fadhel and Masaed Nada of Kuwait earned yellow cards in the 5th and 75th minutes in that order. The Philippines got two yellow cards: Jason Dejang and Simon, both in the second half.
Philippines had a couple of close chances to claw back into the game, but poor finishing spoiled it for them. They were unable to take advantage of the corners, of which they had quite a few.
Kuwait had a couple of more chances in the first half, but had to wait until the second half to script a rout. The second came off the boot of Masaed Nader in the 67th minute, in a scramble of shots and blocks with Nader prodding from the mouth of the goal, foxing a clueless goalkeeper who took a second too many to regain balance from a fall.
Yusuf Nasser had another goal soon afterwards but was a tad slow to reach in time to deflect a side pass into an unguarded D. After the second goal, there was a greater spring in the Kuwaiti step with players getting a little reckless in their shots, while the Philippines, giving up all hope of hitting back, were content to dodge the shots. One such shot found the net off Fahad Al Ansari’s boots, leaving four Philippines defenders stunned, and the goalkeeper flummoxed. The scoreboard ticked to 3-0, and it was only a matter of few more minutes, in which the Philippines clearly had no pretensions of parting water, while Kuwait unsuccessfully tried to rub in the insult with another goal.
Meanwhile, China smashed six second-half goals past Laos on Saturday for a 7-2 win to put one foot in the third round of Asian qualifying for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
Lowly Laos gave the home team some nervy moments at Kunming’s Tuodong Stadium when strikes from Soukaphone Vongchiengkham and Visay Phaphouvanin put the visitors two-up after 31 minutes.
But substitute Yang Xu hit back in first half injury time, and it set off an avalanche of goals in the second period as he added two more, with Chen Tao scoring a double off the bench and two late strikes from midfielder Hao Junmin.
China will now be confident of progressing after Thursday’s second leg to the penultimate stage of Asian qualifying, when big guns Japan, Australia and South Korea enter the competition, along with Bahrain and North Korea.
Jordan also enjoyed a bumper goalfest as they beat Nepal 9-0 with Hasan Abdel Mahmoud grabbing four of the goals.
It was a good day for Gulf sides with wins for Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Oman.
Qatar, the hosts of the 2022 World Cup, got off to a flying start against Vietnam with Mohamed Kasoula putting them ahead in the sixth minute. Second half goals from Meshal Mubarak and Yousef Ahmad Ali secured a 3-0 victory.
Saudi Arabia beat Hong Kong by the same scoreline with Nassir Al Shamrani grabbing a brace while UAE also managed 3-0 win as they beat India, who have yet to play in a World Cup finals.
Oman, meanwhile, beat Myanmar 2-0.
The 2007 Asian champions Iraq continued on their way with a 2-0 win over Yemen while Iran were in impressive form as they dispatched Maldives 4-0 — the former Bayern Munich and Schalke midfielder Ali Karimi among the scorers. In the south-east Asian grudge match, hosts Singapore edged Malaysia 5-3 in an eight-goal thriller 5-3 at the Jalan Besar Stadium.
The visitors made the best possible start as Mohd Safee Bin Mohd Salee put them ahead in the opening minute.
Singapore hit back, though, bagging four before half-time through Aleksander Duric (8), Qiu Li (22), Mustafic Fahrudin (44) and Shi Jiayi (45). Malaysia were not finished though and two goals in two minutes from Abdul Hadi Hin Yahaya and Sali brought it back to 4-3. However a second from Duric nine minutes from time gave Singapore the win.
The second legs will be played on July 28, ahead of a draw for the third-round group stage which takes place in Brazil on July 30.
