Court hands expat 2-year jail, deportation for beating Kuwaiti KUWAIT CITY, July 19: The Criminal Court convicted an expatriate of beating a citizen. The court handed the defendant a two-year imprisonment sentence followed by deportation and was also ordered to pay KD 5,001 in compensation to injuries the plaintiff incurred as a result of beating. According to the plaintiff, the defendant and another person approached and hit him with a stick, and as he tried to avoid beatings, he suffered a fracture in the left hand. The plaintiff said he had previous disagreements with the defendant.
The Criminal Court adjourned the trial of Nasser Abul who has been charged for posting abusive statements of some Gulf countries at the social networking site Twitter until Aug 2. Abul denies posting the messages. He claimed that hackers must have used his account to post them. The message, he said, had been deleted from his iPhone account.
During interrogation, Abul expressed support for the ‘legitimate’ demands by Bahrainis and said he was the reason for the peaceful sit-in held in support of Bahrainis. Asked about an alleged email on his personal computer that gives details on bomb making, he said the email is wide spread. In another case, the Criminal Court acquitted a citizen of smuggling liquor from a GCC country. Case files indicate an officer from the Drug Control General Department (DCGD) received information on the illegal activities of the accused. He then coordinated with an official from the General Customs Administration to arrest the suspect, who allegedly hid the forbidden items in trucks.
During interrogation, the drivers of the trucks said they had an agreement with the accused to drive the vehicles to certain locations in exchange for undisclosed amount but they were not informed about the contents and they did not bother to check the items because it is not part of their job. The citizen denied the accusations, pointing out he is into the import business and he has no idea how the bottles of alcohol ended up in the delivery trucks. After analyzing the arguments and pieces of evidence presented by both parties, the court ruled in favor of the citizen and declared him not guilty.
