Appeals acquits expat accused of smuggling in foreign currency

KUWAIT CITY, July 8: Securitymen have arrested 13 Arab and Asian nationals from Jleeb Shuyoukh, Farwaniya, Khaitan and Riqqae areas for overstay and other criminal offenses during a campaign in Farwaniya governorate. Meanwhile, traffic officers issued 23 citations against the owners of vehicles violating traffic regulations, while 3 cars were impounded and wheel locks were placed on cars parked at unauthorized places or displayed for sale, as well as those parked along the pavements. The campaign is likely to last for an unspecified period.

Expat acquitted: The Court of Appeals recently upheld the verdict of a lower court and acquitted an unidentified expatriate who was accused of smuggling foreign currency into the country and money laundering, reports Al-Anba daily. According to case papers the accused was arrested by customs officers at a border post for carrying foreign currency hidden under the clothes and referred to the Public Prosecution. The Public Prosecution charged the man with illegally smuggling foreign currency into the country and money laundering. During a court hearing defense attorney Mohammed Saleh Al-Ali denied the accusation and referred to the conditions set by the Minister of Interior and Director-General of Customs which states a person has to declare the money if the value is worth more than KD 3,000.

Child left in car: A 2-year-old child who was left alone inside the car in Taima in the scorching summer has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the Jahra Hospital, reports Al-Watan Arabic daily. According to reports the child was on the back seat of the car and as the parents drove home the child reportedly fell asleep. The parents got out of the car and went inside the home and forgot all about the child. After two hours they remembered that the child was in the car and went looking for him. By this time the child was totally dehydrated and unable to move. The condition of the child is believed to be critical. A case of negligence has been filed against the parents at the local police station.

4 escape from death: Four citizens of the Sultanate of Oman had a miraculous escape from death when their car went up in flames on the Second Ring Road, reports Al-Watan Arabic daily.
Without going into details of the accident, the daily said paramedics and firemen acting on information rushed to the spot and took the injured men to the Amiri Hospital and put out the fire. The cause of the accident is not known.

KD 1,800 stolen: An Arab man has filed a complaint with the Farwaniya Police Station accusing an unidentified person of stealing KD 1,800 from his bank account via the Internet, reports Al-Rai daily. A security source said police are investigating the case.

Man held for drugs: Custom officers of the Kuwait International Airport have referred an Arab man to Anti Drug and Alcohol Control Department for attempting to smuggle three pieces of hashish into the country, reports Al-Rai daily.
According to sources the man looked panicked when he approached the inspection counter and an officer subjected him to a thorough check.
The hashish was found neatly hidden among his clothes in the baggage.

Fight over ‘parking’: Six Arab men who were injured during a fight over a parking slot in a suburb of Jleeb Al-Shuyoukh have been admitted to the Farwaniya Hospital, reports Al-Qabas daily.
It has been reported 30 Arab men armed with knives and batons were involved in the fight which snowballed into a free for all between relatives of friends and relatives of two men who were initially involved in the fight over a right to park a car.
The daily added the six injured men have received stab wounds on various parts of their body. The rest of the fighters have been arrested and detained at the Jleeb Al-Shuyoukh Police Station.
A security source told the daily when the Operations Department of the Ministry of Interior received a report on the fight several police patrols and five ambulances were rushed to the scene of the fight.
