‘Ruling’ revokes custody of kids given to alcohol-addicted mom ‘Dust’ shoots up fish prices

KUWAIT CITY, July 3: The recent wave of dust has led to an increase in prices of fish in the local market, reports Al-Watan Arabic daily.
According to sources, the price of Iranian shrimps is ranging between KD 2.5 and KD 5 per kilo depending on size, while one kilo humour is being sold for KD 3, one kilo crabs for KD 1.5 and one kilo Iranian zubeidi is costing KD 5.
Sources say the fish available in the market is not fresh but there is nobody to complain to as the Consumers Protection Department is closed on Fridays and Saturdays.

Alcohol-addicted mom: The Appeals Court upheld the ruling of a lower court which revoked the custody of the children from the mother and gave them to the father after the mother was convicted for consuming alcohol.
The father had requested the cancellation of the custody given to his ex-wife, saying she is addicted to alcohol and that the children can’t be left in her care. The father’s lawyer Faisal Mohammad Al-Otaibi said following the conviction of the mother, she lacks the moral and ethical authority to raise the children.

Divorce granted: The Court of First Instance has granted divorce to a man and stripped his wife of all marriage and divorce entitlements. It also ordered her to pay back the KD 4,000 dowry to her husband.
The man had filed for divorce on the grounds that his wife cheated on him and asked the court to drop all rights of marriage and divorce she is entitled to. His lawyer Abeer Al-Mutairi said a marriage is a contract between a husband and wife, but the woman violated it by having an affair with a foreigner. Meanwhile, the Personal Status Court recently dismissed the petition of an unidentified man, who asked his ex-wife to return the dowry he paid to her during their wedding.
Case files indicate a court decision had previously been issued granting divorce to the couple but there was no provision stating the woman should return the dowry amounting to KD 7,000.
The woman’s lawyer argued in court that his client cannot be forced to pay back the dowry. The court ruled in favor of the woman and dismissed the case.

‘Sexual’ charges quashed: An expatriate man was acquitted and discharged by the Criminal Court on charges of sexual assault.
The court’s decision was based on contradictions detected in statements the plaintiff had given, which lacked concrete evidence. A woman claimed the man joined her inside a lift where he allegedly tried to embrace and grope her.
However, the defendant lawyer argued that the accusation was baseless, considering the plaintiff only came forward to press charges 2 months after the alleged incident had taken place.

Verdict against MP: The Court of Appeals recently upheld the verdict of a lower court and ruled in favor of a company in a lawsuit filed by MP Musallam Al-Barrak, reports Al-Watan Arabic daily.
The MP had filed a libel lawsuit against the company.

Woman ‘acquitted’: The Misdemeanor Court supervised by Advisor Abdulnasser Khuraibet upheld the verdict of First Instance Court that acquitted an Egyptian woman of breach of trust when the husband sued her for seeking divorce.
The complainant alleged that the defendant collected KD 4,000 on January 15, 2008 and signed papers in that regard. However, she allegedly declined to pay back the aforementioned amount when the husband asked for it. The woman denied the allegation and said the husband had forged her signatures on the papers.
The defendant attorney Esmat Al-Kharboutli argued that the complainant’s statement contradicted account he had given in the presence of Public Prosecution, and doubted logic in the story.
