Kuwait said to bust spy ring

KUWAIT CITY, June 28: Kuwait has allegedly busted another spy ring reportedly working for the intelligence services of an Arab country and an unidentified political party, reports Al-Jaridah daily.
The daily, however, added the country for whose intelligence services the ring members are working is currently embroiled in political turmoil, facing unprecedented demonstrations from people to oust the ruling regime while the political party is mentioned as ‘an armed organization’.
The ringleader, has been identified only as A.A., and was allegedly taken into custody four days ago upon his arrival from the so-called ‘troubled’ country.
The daily, without identifying the sources, said the spy ring was plotting to carry out sabotage acts in Kuwait and other countries in the region to ‘divert the attention of the people’.
The daily added, during interrogations the members of the cell are said to have admitted to having links with the intelligence network of that country and also the intelligence of the armed party.
They have also confessed that their task was to gather information on Kuwait and send a detailed report on a decision taken by Kuwait’s Interior Ministry to ban their fellow citizens from entering Kuwait, the daily said.
Their task was also to monitor the actions taken by Kuwaiti lawmakers following developments in the concerned Arab country and their support for the uprising and demands to expel the ambassador of that particular country.
The ring members also said they have taken pictures of vital installations around the country and recorded the recent demonstrations organized by the opposition in Kuwait against the ruling regime.
During interrogations the members of the espionage network have disclosed there are other spy rings working in the country with similar assignments but they said they did not know their identities.
They have also disclosed that information gathered by the spy ring was sent to a liaison officer in the embassy of that country or forwarded to an intelligence website. The ringleader also said, he moved from one Arab country to another to coordinate efforts, convey information or receive instructions.
The Al-Jaridah daily, citing sources, said the security agencies were put on alert after receiving an intelligence report from unidentified sources about the presence of what the daily called ‘sabotage elements’ from an Arab country and a paramilitary party from another Arab country in Kuwait.
The report warned these elements have taken pictures of sensitive locations in Arab Gulf states and sent names of expatriates and Gulf residents, who work against the regime to the high command, say the sources.
