Hosts Germany off to flying start France edge Nigeria BERLIN, June 26, (AFP): Hosts and defending champions Germany got their women’s World Cup campaign off to a flying start on Sunday as they beat Group A rivals Canada 2-1 at Berlin’s Olympic Stadium. Having won both the 2003 and 2007 editions, Germany are bidding to complete a hat-trick of titles on home soil and had few problems against the Canadians, who threatened the German goal on only rare occasions. First-half goals by midfielders Kerstin Garefrekes and Celia Okoyino da Mbabi put the hosts in control before Canada captain Christine Sinclair, who broke her nose in the first half, slotted home a late free-kick for the guests.
“It was the first game so we were a bit nervous. There is room for improvements and we will improve,” said goal-scorer Garefrekes, who also supplied the pass for the second goal.
The win puts the Germans top of Group A after France’s earlier 1-0 win over Nigeria.
“We got two goals in the first half and didn’t play so well, then in the second half we were much better organised, but we couldn’t score,” said Germany coach Silvia Neid. “Things got tight at the end and it could have been 2-2, so I am very happy we won the first game.”
The hosts squandered a string of second-half chances, while Canada grew in confidence as the game wore on.
“The first game in a World Cup tournament is always tough and maybe were a bit intimidated at the start, but I think we did well,” said Canada coach Carolina Morace, who paid tribute to her plucky captain Sinclair.
“Christine is a fantastic player and she took her chance well. The doctors have told me the nose was broken, but she insisted on playing on. “She knows what she can do and it would have been hard to take her off with her experience.”
With Germany having gone through the entire 2007 campaign without conceding a goal, Sinclair became the first player to score against them at a World Cup since Sweden’s Hanna Ljungberg in the Germans’ 2-1 win in the 2003 final.
After a glitzy opening ceremony when a giant mirror ball released hundreds of football-shaped balloons into the Berlin sky, Germany got their campaign off to a good start with the first goal coming after just 10 minutes.
Having been denied from a crisp shot just moments before, right winger Garefrekes headed home a cross from left-back Babett Peter to put the hosts ahead in front of a sell-out crowd of 73,680.
Germany then punished some sloppy defending as centre forward Okoyino da Mbabi made it 2-0 just before the break.
A towering long-ball from Garefrekes put Okoyino da Mbabi — who turns 23 on Monday — away and with the Canadian defence nowhere near her, she slotted her shot past goalkeeper Erin McLeod on 42 minutes.
It was the German midfielder’s fourth goal in her last five games.
Canada’s Italian coach Carolina Morace made two changes at half-time, while Germany’s Silvia Neid opted to switch captain Birgit Prinz for 20-year-old Alexandra Popp, while Okoyino da Mbabi made way for the experienced Inka Grings. Both Popp and midfielder Kim Kulig clipped the crossbar with second-half shots as the hosts failed to add to their tally before Sinclair curled in a late free-kick to pull one back.
The last time Germany lost was in March 2010 when the USA inflicted a 3-2 defeat at the Algarve Cup.
Two-time women’s World Cup winners USA open their Group C campaign against North Korea in Dresden on Tuesday.
France opened their 2011 women’s World Cup with a hard-earned 1-0 victory over Nigeria here Sunday thanks to Marie-Laure Delie’s goal in a crucial Group A encounter.
A near sell-out crowd of 25,475 in Sinsheim saw a number of good chances but no goals until Delie’s goal in the 56th minute gave France three points in the group with Nigeria remaining on zero.
The game at Rhein Neckar Arena was considered a near must-win for both sides with two-time reigning champions and hosts Germany must likely to advance as the other team from Group A to the quarter-finals.
France were the dominating team right from the start, especially on the left side through Louisa Necib — for whom the Nigerians had no answer.
The French were unable to create a real chance though until Elise Bussaglia’s long blast at the 17-minute mark, which Nigeria keeper Precious Dede did a fine job fending away.
A minute later Gaetane Thiney’s attempt off a corner struck the right post, followed by defender Wendie Renard shooting over the crossbar from six yards out in the 23rd minute.
Nigeria slowly worked their way into the game and Desure Oparanozie was sent clear down the right side in the 25th minute. But the 17-year-old failed to keep her nerves and shot well left of goal in a one-on-one situation against French keeper Berangere Sapowicz, missing clearly the best chance of the first half.
Uche was forced to replace Faith Ikidi in favour of Josephine Chukwunonye after just 34 minutes.
And Necib had a long shot batted away for a corner by Dede a minute before the break.
France coach Bruno Bini made one switch at half-time, bringing in Eugiene Le Sommer for Sandrine Soubeyrand.
The move paid off for Les Bleus as Le Sommer received a through ball on the right side and the Olympique Lyon midfielder crossed into the box where Necib got her foot on the ball before Delie blasted it past Dede.
The French celebrated with Bussaglia acting as if she was shining Delie’s shoes.
The 23-yearp-old Montpellier forward Delie is in fantastic form, having now scored 22 goals in 21 caps and 12 goals in her last six matches.
“I give it my best each time the purpose of a striker is to score and voila!” said Delie.
“It just keeps going. She is really unbelievable,” said Bini of Delie.
Delie nearly struck again after 64 minutes, twisting and striking but only finding Dede.
Bini had to make a final substitution five minutes later with Renard coming out holding her groin area and replaced by Laure Lepailleur.
Nigeria went for broke and brought on 16-year-old starlet Uchechi Sunday in the 78th minute for another forward.
But the French defence held — just barely as left back Sonia Bompastor helped clear a dangerous header with four minutes to play.
France nearly finished off the African giants but Necib’s free kick went just over the crossbar in the 90th minute.
France next play Canada on Thursday while Nigeria face hosts Germany that same day.
