Hearing today in Filipina’s murder Kuwaiti man absolved in drugs case
KUWAIT CITY, June 18: The Criminal Court recently started hearing the case of an Egyptian accused of murdering a Filipina whose remains were found at the International Fair Grounds in Mishref.
Case files indicate the accused kidnapped the victim from Salmiya, killed her and hid her remains in one of the halls at the fair grounds. The autopsy report showed the alleged murderer hit the victim with an iron bar and some sharp objects. The accused is also said to have taken two mobile phones from the victim.
Man absolved: The Court of Appeals amended a jail term of three and half years plus KD 500 fine against a Kuwaiti man who had been sentenced in absentia, and refrained from pronouncing judgment after ordering the defendant to pay a bail bond of KD 100 and signing an undertaking of good conduct for one year.
The prosecuting officer stressed that the defendant had aroused suspicion of detectives for drug addiction and they followed up his activities until a search warrant was issued to rummage around his residence in Hawalli, where detectives recovered needle, syringes and other materials for illicit drug administration. They also found three fingers of hashish inside his private room. The suspect is said to have confessed to using those materials to consume drugs, but refused to name the source of his supply.
Counsel to the defendant Abdullah Al-Alanda refuted the prosecution’s claim, saying his client was a drug addict who underwent rehabilitation. He also faulted the manner his client’s residence was searched, which he claimed violated Articles 17 and 18 of criminal procedures, and Article 35 of Law 74/1983 regarding narcotics, its usage, regulation, and trafficking. He declared that the detective had capitalized on the complaint of the suspect’s mother, who alleged that her child was an addict and needed rehabilitation assistance.
He accused the officer of turning this information into a confidential hint to carry out investigation and search. He maintained that the issue did not require investigation, because it came from the mother.
Colonel fined: The Appeals Court overruled the verdict of a lower court that acquitted a colonel in the Ministry of Interior of verbally assaulting a female employee. The court fined the colonel KD 10 and transferred the civil lawsuit to a competent court.
The officer, who heads a citizen service center in the country, is said to have abused the woman who is also employed at the same center. The case file shows that the officer requested the employee to process sponsorship-related paperwork that lacked necessary documents, and the officer was enraged storming out of his office and hurling abusive words at the lady employee in the presence of the fellow employees and other applicants, as she pointed out to a messenger sent by the officer that the application lacked specific documents. The colonel had even tried to take her place at the counter, and the woman claimed that the officer waved his hands trying to hit her.
According to the plaintiff lawyer, the initial verdict ignored all claims by his client, even though witnesses at the scene said the officer had used his power to complete illegal transactions by force. The lawyer noted that a complaint has been filed at the military court against the officer.
