Scope TV director, wife fined in libel case Owner Juwaihal penalised for insulting MP
KUWAIT CITY, June 14: The Criminal Court, presided over by Judge Abdul-Rahman Al-Darme, fined Director of Scope satellite channel Talal Al-Sa’eed, his wife and a producer of a controversial program KD 3,000 each. The court also fined owner Mohammad Al-Juwaihal KD 150 for insulting MP Musallam Al-Barrak during the program. The court ordered the defendants to pay KD 5,000 compensation to the plaintiff.
The plaintiff’s lawyer Thamer Al-Jad’aa said that the defendants made false allegations against his client because he didn’t interfere in judicial activities. He added that the judgment will serve as deterrent to others who might plan to put a person in a suspicious situation to paint the judiciary as being biased.
Meanwhile, in latest developments, the Criminal Court decided to form a medical committee to mentally evaluate one of the 20 defendants in the alleged torture and killing of Kuwaiti citizen Mohammed Al-Maimouni and the court was adjourned until September 6 when the committee files its final report.
The committee involves Dr Abdullah Al-Hammadi, the chief forensics expert at the General Directorate of Forensics, as well as the head of Psychiatry Department at the College of Medicine in Kuwait University. The committee will evaluate the 17th defendant, Mohammed Al-Mirry, to determine the level of responsibility he has taken for his actions.
In another development, the Misdemeanor Court of Appeal chaired by Judge Mohammed Zayed cancelled the 6 months imprisonment sentenced slapped on a citizen by the Court of First Instance and refrained from punishing a second suspect.
The court acquitted the two defendants of swindling the plaintiff who claimed the suspects had cheated him in a commercial transaction worth KD 154,000,000.
The defendant attorneys, Abdulaziz and Khalid Thaher Al-Khateeb argued the investigation is out of place in putting the suspects to trial, considering it lacks substance and truth, while it contradicts the statements of the complainant and witnesses.
