Activists renew call for PM to resign Over 1,500 turn out for ‘Friday of Petition’ rally
KUWAIT CITY, June 10: Youth political movements ‘Kafi’, ‘Sour Al-Khamis’, ‘Nahaj’ and the students union organized a ‘Friday of Petition’ rally to demand the ouster of Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammed Al-Sabah at the Erada Square.
The rally was attended by a number of political activists, lawyers, parliamentary blocs and MPs including Musallam Al-Barrak, Faisal Al-Muslim, Daifullah Buramiya, Falah Al-Sawagh, Khalid Al-Tahous and Waleed Al-Tabtabaei.
Addressing the rally MP Faisal Al-Muslim began by congratulating HH the Amir for his safe return home after medical treatment abroad.
He went on to say that in spite of the media campaign against the opposition MPs, the gathering of more than 1,500 people will definitely unsettle the nerves of the government and he called on the youth to unite for their cause because ‘united we stand divided we fall’, he added.
He also called on the youth to rescue the country from the failures of consecutive governments, which have used all means including money and the corrupt media and mercenaries and pro-government MPs to remain in power against the wishes of the people.
The prime minister, he said, had several opportunities to develop the country but on all occasions he failed to live up to the expectations of the citizens in spite of forming seven consecutive governments.
A budget of KD 92 billion was approved for the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammed in addition to media support but he achieved nothing. With all this support he could not translate it into a reality on the ground.
He also talked about the petition which is aimed at unseating the prime minister from power. He added this is not the first or the last petition but the efforts will continue until a new government is formed with a new prime minister and new system.
About 100 youths chanted slogans and marched on the street in front of the Parliament building, carrying placards which read ‘Leave’, ‘Leave’. They also chanted similar slogans against the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammed.
Khalid Al-Tahous read to the gathering the contents of the petition which contained details of how laws are being violated, particularly those concerning fighting corruption and lack of implementing laws in general. He also highlighted how the prime minister worked to disrupt parliamentary work in collusion with certain forces.
Al-Tahous disclosed how the government avoided attending important sessions of the National Assembly to disrupt the work of the Parliament.
Attorney Abdullah Al-Ahmad said according to the Constitution if people and MPs lose confidence in the prime minister he has to leave office.
He added Article 44 of the Constitution allows citizens to organize rallies and based on this article the citizens will continue to demonstrate until the Prime Minister gives in to the wishes of the people and steps down.
He also cited the example of the Japanese prime minister who resigned when it was discovered that he had accepted a $500 worth gift. But here in Kuwait, some MPs are said to have taken thousands of dinars from the Prime Minister and yet they accuse others and call them trouble makers.
MP Musallam Al-Barrak said the petition shows which MPs are with the prime minister and those not. There are reports that about sixteen MPs have so far signed the petition for the ouster of the prime minister and his Deputy Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmed Al-Fahd who is said to have already tendered his resignation.
He also questioned the prime minister about his achievements in the areas of health, education, and housing in the development plan. Answering the question he said ‘Nothing’.
After the rally the demonstrators marched from the Erada Square to the Council of Ministers building led by MP Musallam Al-Barrak, but were prevented by securitymen from approaching the building.
