Enact ‘new’ law on public meets ‘Interior’ earns praise

KUWAIT CITY, June 1: The National Assembly must enact a new law on organizing public meetings and gatherings, reports Al-Seyassah daily quoting Media Bureau Director at the Kuwait Lawyers Society Aziz Al-Sayed.

Al-Sayed stressed the need to change the existing law, since some of its articles have been declared unconstitutional by the Constitutional Court.
He said this means the participants in public gatherings are not subject to the law; hence, they cannot be put on trial because such an act cannot be considered a crime without a legal text in this regard.  He added the authorities cannot prevent anyone from holding public gatherings or arrest participants who do not engage in violent actions.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Interior (MoI) deserves commendation for dealing properly with the participants of the peaceful protest in Safat Square a few days ago, reports Al-Seyassah daily quoting Kuwait Human Rights Society (KHRS) Chairman Dr Adel Al-Damkhi.

Al-Damkhi praised Deputy Premier and Interior Minister Sheikh Ahmad Al-Humoud Al-Sabah for personally visiting the square, proving that he is keen on preventing both the protesters and securitymen from committing violations. He also lauded the protesters for strictly complying with the directives of the ministry, so there were no clashes with the security officers, similar to what happened in previous gatherings.
In another development, Al-Damkhi hailed the government’s decision to grant ration cards to Bedouns. He said this is in response to the previous demand of the society to end the suffering of these people.  He also urged the government to consider the residents’ families by allotting some shares to ease their financial burdens and ensure their psychological and social stability. He proposed laying down a mechanism for the distribution of shares at reasonable prices for the families, not individuals.
