Sheikh Ahmed grilling will be enlightening, vow MPs ‘Minister not asked to face interpellation or resign’

KUWAIT CITY, May 24: MPs Adel Al-Sarawwy and Marzooq Al-Ghanim urged the Kuwaiti public to anticipate an enlightening grilling session next Tuesday where Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs, Sheikh Ahmed Al-Fahad Al-Sabah will be questioned on many topics that he has evaded previously.
Speaking at a press conference, Al-Sarawwy said that Sheikh Ahmed Al-Sabah has been informed by political forces that he must face his questioning or resign.  Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Ali Al-Rashid, however, denied that the Sheikh Al-Fahad Al-Sabah was asked by the government to succumb to his questioning or tender his resignation.
Sheikh Ahmed Al-Sabah’s grilling request was submitted by both MPs on May 15, a few days after the formation of the new government. The grilling session is scheduled to take place on May 31.
According to Al-Sarawwy, Sheikh Al-Fahad escaped his previous interpellation motion after admitting his willingness to face the event in the media. He added that, this time round, the minister is now attempting to refer his grilling to the Constitutional Court or the Legal and Legislative Committee on the pretext that there are two topics within the motion, including the sports issue, that are unconstitutional.
The interpellation request against Sheikh Ahmad include the misappropriation of public funds, alleged violation of the Constitution and the law, irregularities in the bidding for some projects at the Public Authority for Housing Welfare (PAHW) with an estimated total cost of KD71 million.
Grilling
The grilling also includes question on the illegal signing of a contract with the Asian Olympic Council for the construction of a building on state-owned land, violation of laws related to the development plan, misleading the public, tarnishing the image of Kuwait in the international community, and attempt to prevent the country’s participation in international sports activities.
For his part, MP Marzooq Al-Ghanim said that the minister’s attempts to refer his grilling to the Constitutional Court or the Legal and Legislative Committee is unacceptable after Sheikh Al-Fahad’s announcement that he will face his grilling in an open session.  He added that the minister was able to push for the resignation of the government to escape his previous grilling but this option is no longer available.
According to Al-Ghanim, Sheikh Ahmed Al-Fahad Al-Sabah is responsible for the field of sports in Kuwait as he had admitted his responsibility on his official website.
Meanwhile, Speaker of Parliament Jassem Al-Khorafi urged MPs on Tuesday to respect the Ministry of Interior’s decision to ban all gatherings and demonstrations. He expressed his optimism that MPs will caution against enticing sedition.
Al-Khorafi commented on the alleged threats against MP Ali Al-Deqbasi, who is the speaker of the Arab Parliament, due to his support of the Syrian uprising. He said that it not fitting for the National Assembly to issue a statement in that regard since not enough information is known on the issue. He said that the decision to issue a statement is up to the Arab Parliament.
Al-Deqbasi was allegedly threatened by unknown entities after he recommended the Arab Parliament to issue a statement condemning the atrocities and bloodshed against citizens committed by both the Libyan and Syrian regimes. The move was vehemently opposed by Syrian members of the Arab Parliament.
