KUWAIT CITY, May 17: Ministry of Interior was not alert to the entry of pick-up truck that carried explosive materials to the Shuaiba Port, as part of measures to test the level of security at the port, notwithstanding the risks involved in declining to notify the official security authorities.
According to sources, the pick-up is owned by an unidentified company that signed a contract with the port authority to conduct a mock exercise at the port and test the capacity of dogs in detecting explosive materials. However, the process required advanced permission of the security authorities, considering the sensitive nature of the issue.
The Criminal Evidences Department verified that materials found inside the truck are similar to those used by the military in training operations. The outcome of investigations will be revealed by security authorities in a press statement to confirm if the act is related to terrorism.
Sources noted the authorities have carried out extensive investigations with companies having contracts with the Shuaiba Port, as well as the port officials.
The Ministry of Interior has yet to issue an official statement in this regard. However, informed security sources speaking to Al-Seyassah daily said the ministry would rather remain silent until the investigations are concluded to prove that a company affiliated to Kuwait Petroleum Company had deliberately transported the explosive substances to the port, with the help of three expatriate workers.
