Cabinet a transitional govt, doomed to failure: Al-Barrak Walaan to withdraw from Tuesday’s session
KUWAIT CITY, May 9: Opposition MP Musallam Al-Barrak held a press conference on Monday and reiterated his condemnation of His Highness the Prime Minister, Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammed Al-Sabah. He maintained that the current Cabinet is a transitional government and doomed to failure, after which a new PM with a new approach will be appointed.
The new Cabinet, the 7th under the rule of Sheikh Nasser Al-Sabah, will be sworn in during Tuesday’s parliamentary session. The appointed ministers were instantly subjected to disapproval by opposition members of parliament who vowed not to cooperate with the PM.
Al-Barrak further described the new government as “weak and added that the prime minister’s insistence to hold his seat has harmed Kuwait and its unity, but advised his colleagues to give Sheikh Nasser a chance to face interpellation in an open session. He said that the PM is surrounded by individuals who reassure him that relations between the legislative and executive authorities are stable when it is not.
Moreover, MP Mubarak Al-Walaan said that he will withdraw from Tuesday’s parliamentary session when the swearing in of the Cabinet begins and invited his colleagues to do the same. He said that the new formation has disappointed the ambitions of the Kuwaiti people as controversial ministers, who have not fulfilled their duties previously, were re-appointed.
Speaker of Parliament, Jassem Al-Khorafi commented that the questioning of government ministers is the constitutional right of MPs and that the expected requested are “not the first and won’t be the last as this is the way a democracy functions.”
Al-Khorafi expected that any grilling sessions held in the near future will proceed smoothly as he is confident that MPs will abide by Constitution while practicing their rights.
Two grilling requests are expected to be filed against Sheikh Nasser by the Popular Action Bloc (PAB) and the Development and Reform Bloc (DRB)
Furthermore, MP Saadoun Hammad said that he will be meeting with a number of independent MPs to work on a grilling request against the re-appointed Minister of Health, Dr. Hilal Al-Sayer. Meanwhile, the liberal National Action Bloc (NAB) has promised to resume their grilling motion against Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs and Minister of Development, Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah.
MP Saad Zunaifar expressed his disapproval of the pending grilling requests and said that the government should be given a chance to begin their duties before questioning them. He added that state ministers should be judged by their actions not by their names and their titles.
