419 retiring teachers have their contracts extended Female teachers protest, seek protection from colleagues
KUWAIT CITY, May 6: Undersecretary at the Ministry of Education Tomadher Al-Sederawi revealed that the contracts of 419 teachers who have crossed the legal retirement age of 60 years are being extended for another year, reports Al-Seyassah daily.
The teachers hail from Egypt, Syria and Jordan, she said, adding candidates who were freshly recruited from these and other Arab countries might not be able to arrive in Kuwait at the right time due to unrest in their respective countries. This might affect the next academic session, added Al-Sederawi.
The decision affects 60 teachers in Jahra, 81 in Capital, 70 in Farwaniya, 48 in Mubarak Al-Kabeer, 88 in Ahmadi and 75 in Hawalli and they will have their contracts extended until the 2012-2013 session.
Forty-five female teachers with their families recently demonstrated in front of one of the primary schools in the Ahmadi Educational Zone demanding what they called ‘protection’ from four female teachers who they say are not only causing a ‘lot of’ problems inside the school but also are not complying with the rules and regulations of the educational and training process, reports Al-Watan Arabic daily.
The protestors told the daily that among the violations of their four ‘colleagues’ include assault on the headmistress and success in seeking her transfer to another school in addition to creating problems for the assistant headmistress who ended in resigning from her post.
They added these teachers also interfere in the administrative affairs, use indecent words against heads of the divisions and other teachers and dump their work on other teachers and leave the school to run their personal errands.
They say these teachers also interfere in the examination process and have even forced the school management to raise the grades of one of the pupils so that she could get an award as one of the top students.
When the Director of Ahmadi Educational Zone Talaq Al-Haim met the demonstrating teachers they reminded him that several complaints had been filed with the area educational zone but no action had been taken.
However, Al-Haim denied receiving any complaint but has promised to look into their complaint.
