Oil workers planning strikes
KUWAIT CITY, May 5: Vice-President of Workers’ Union of Private Oil Sector Companies Yousef Dashti has threatened that workers would resort to strikes and sit-ins if their demand for appointing officials of Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC) as board members of oil companies was not fulfilled, reports Al-Seyassah daily.
Dashti described the vacancies in the board, which have not been filled since last November, as a precedent that is affecting Kuwaiti workforce in the private sector. He called on the next government to take proper decisions on this issue “or risk strikes and sit-ins by workers.” Dashti said private oil companies are exploiting the vacancies to dodge laws concerned with the protection of national labor, a matter which, he says, resulted in many lay-offs in the sector. The appointment of strong board members will help in resolving all problems in the private oil sector, he added.
