No ‘load-shedding’ in summer: official Power plant inaugurated

KUWAIT, May 4, (KUNA): Minister of Electricity and Water Dr. Bader Al-Shuraiaan said here Tuesday evening upon inaugurating the first stage of new Al-Sabiya power plant project that the programmed power cut has been postponed, asserting that “what sees nowadays is a big achievement, and take pride in such work.”
Al-Shuraiaan also asserted, in a statement, that, “this summer, which represents the most daunting challenge, will not see any problem related to electricity generation, though the lingering minor challenge is related to distributing electricity to some areas.”

He also said that the Ministry of Electricity and Water succeeded in linking the new Al-Sabiya power plant to the main network with a capacity of 400 megawatt through Al-Salibiya power plant, adding that this will be followed by operating two gas units provided that six generators will successively be put into action with a total capacity of 1,300 megawatt.

The new gas and steam units will be introduced three months prior to the set date at least, namely before the end of next year, Al-Shuraiaan explained.

Additionally, he said that Al-Sabiya power plant will be operated at its total capacity by next June according to the schedule agreed upon with the company implementing the project, noting that, “it is splendid to see the efforts which we started two years ago come into being, and it is good step to overcome shortage in generating electricity which we suffered from over the past years.” He also pointed out that Al-Sabiya power plant will see this year the addition of 1,300 megawatts, while next year will witness the completion of steam generators which will increase the output capacity to 2,000 megawatt through the use of hot gases.

He also asserted that plant operation will help the ministry overcome the problem of generating electricity, while there are relentless efforts made for developing power transfer and distribution.
Finally, Al-Shuraiaan said that the ministry has a pre-set plans with areas of next projects determined, and agreed upon by experts, pointing out that all these projects will on the coastal strip, and asserting that the ministry is keen on using state-of-the-art technologies.
