‘Ministers must declare assets’

KUWAIT CITY, April 12: A number of lawmakers have urged Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammad to ask all ministers in the new government to declare their assets as well as those owned by their wives and children in order to avoid criticism and reduce tension inside the Parliament, reliable sources told Al-Shahed daily.
Sources say bank statements, reports from the Real Estate Department and records of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry can be used in the declaration of assets.
Stating that the procedure will help in controlling large-scale financial violations that periodically come to light in many ministries and government authorities, sources said a number of politicians and MPs are studying the possibility of making ministers declare their assets after leaving their positions, particularly those whose property and wealth grew manifold during their short tenure.
Meanwhile, a powerful lobby consisting of politicians, lawmakers and traders is reportedly trying to create a rift between Sheikh Nasser and other Sheikhs in his government.
The lobby is planning to meet the premier after the formation of the new government to inform him about their political survey and also to expose some Shiite lawmakers and prove that they do not always support him, said sources.
