Maids issue tops agenda Kuwait, Jakarta in talks

KUWAIT CITY, March 17: The Health and Social Affairs Committee and the Environment and Nuclear Energy Committee met with an Indonesian delegation on Wednesday to discuss relations between Kuwait and Indonesia.

Liberal MP, Dr Aseel Al-Awadhi, who is member of both committees, said that the Indonesian delegation wished to discuss the situation of domestic workers in Kuwait. She said that members of the health committee informed the foreign delegation that legislation regarding domestic workers had to come from the executive branch as all the talks between both governments were ongoing and are still in the process.
“The Indonesian delegation stressed on how the relationship between both governments is positive and solving the issues of their domestic workers in Kuwait will only strengthen the existing relations between both nations,” Al-Awadhi commented to the Arab Times.

She added that the delegation thanked the MPs for passing the new labor law, which seeks to protect workers rights in Kuwait and would like to see the same progress being achieved in terms of passing the domestic workers legislation in the near future.

Regarding nuclear energy and the environment, Al-Awadhi said that the issue of nuclear energy was discussed between both parties.

“The Indonesian delegation said that they use alternative sources of energy such as wind and hydroelectric energy for their local energy supplies. As they were talking about their local experience, the Indonesian delegation did mention that there is big opposition from their citizens to the use of nuclear energy,” she stated.

Meanwhile, tribal MP Al-Saifi Mubarak Al-Saifi announced on Thursday that the grilling request against the Minister of Health, Dr. Hilal Al-Sayer, will be submitted by him and MP Yousef Al-Zalzalah after the grilling on part of the National Action Bloc (NAB) is completed.
Al-Saifi said that the Ministry of Health is full of irregularities and violations as well as inhumane treatment of cancer patients and patients of intractable illnesses. He expressed hope that the minister does not resign before the questioning or withdraw from the grilling.
