Repeal laws that violate human rights: Al-Sabah Activist lawyer takes up issue of expat workers
KUWAIT CITY, Dec 10: Human Right activist lawyer Fawziya Al-Sabah has strongly resented and shown her displeasure on the violations of rights of expatriate workers, reports Al-Seyassah daily.
She called on the government to take the opportunity on the World Human Rights Day and pass a law granting the workers their rights to resort to court when their request to change residence permit is rejected by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor.
Al-Sabah has urged the cancellation of laws and decisions that violate human rights like allowing the detention of a worker whenever there is a disagreement with the sponsor.
She decried the many stumbling blocks placed in front of the workers to prevent them from changing their sponsors such as delaying the complaints raised by this section of people, a situation which gives the sponsors space to maneuver by registering a case of absenteeism against the workers.
She said the people also don’t take the workers serious in offices, while their salaries are too low to hire lawyers.
Al-Sabah disclosed in spite of the seriousness displayed by the Minister of Social Affairs and Labor Dr Mohammed Mohsen Al-Affasi in improving labor laws, the problems still persist because the new laws have yet to be implemented.
Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor Undersecretary Mohammad Al-Kandari asked the Kuwait Municipality to issue a license for the renovation and maintenance of the shelter for expatriate workers in Ohm Hamidi Al-Ansari School in Jleeb Al-Shuyoukh, reports Al-Watan Arabic daily.
Al-Kandari said the school includes four main buildings, a mosque, a theatre and playgrounds. He stressed the need for the immediate approval of the license to protect the image of Kuwait in the international community, especially after the issuance of reports from a number of global organizations that have accused the country of neglecting labor and human rights.
