Activist rejects US report on religious freedom Contradicts reality on the ground: AI Damkhi

KUWAIT CITY, Nov 26: Human Rights activist Dr Adel Al-Damkhi rejected the US State Department’s report on religious freedom in Kuwait, saying it contradicts the reality on the ground and could incite sedition, reports Al-Seyassah daily.

Al-Damkhi cited sectarian inclined expressions such as “A glass barrier has been set to prevent Shiites from being appointed to leadership positions in the National Guard” could inflame sectarian strife among the citizens.

“I wonder the kind of relationship religious freedom has with the appointment of leadership in state institutions, and I urge Kuwaiti Foreign Affairs Ministry to react immediately on the report which abuses Kuwait”, he said.

Meanwhile, member of the Supreme Council for Planning and Secretary General of Kuwait Independent Assembly Dr Bader Al-Mallah condemned the report, which he said includes many statements and misleading notions far from the reality.

He stressed the report has been politicized and promoted by a political bloc that had earlier played a similar role to harm the country’s image. He believes the report interferes in the internal affairs of the country.
In a statement, Al-Mallah noted many countries across the world frown upon the American values and principles, and Islamic conservative societies that are proud of their customs and traditions can not employ such practices.

For his part, member of Kuwait Independent Assembly, former MP Duaij Al-Jeri stated the assembly rejects the content and format of report the US State Department has issued on religious freedom. He added the report lacks accuracy and objectivity, and portrays Kuwait as a society devoid of tolerance and unity.
