‘No justification to impose taxes’ Women MPs urged to intensify efforts in parliament
KUWAIT CITY, Nov 7: Many lawmakers have opposed the tax bill which the government is planning to forward to the National Assembly, reports Al-Qabas daily.
The lawmakers wondered how ordinary citizens who are already burdened due to inflation can cope with taxes. They opined that countries tax citizens when they are not capable of providing services and infrastructure facilities for their people and since Kuwait is not having financial problems, there is no justification for imposing taxes.
MP Dulahi Al-Hajeri said the middle class which makes the larger part of the society would be most affected, because cost of living will surely increase when traders pay more taxes.
Meanwhile, Professor of Sociology in Kuwait University and political activist Dr Dalal Al-Zebin affirmed that women haven’t attained much success in the parliament because they are still new there. She noted it’s not appropriate to reprimand the women lawmakers for their performances at this time, reports Al-Seyassah daily.
In an interview with the daily, Al-Zebin urged the women MPs to intensify efforts in the Parliament, seeing that voters are still waiting for their achievements. She indicated their victory in 2009 will pave the way for other women to join the National Assembly in future.
In the meantime, Al-Zebin urged the lawmakers to prioritize the issue of housing rights for Kuwaiti women to ensure their stability. She called on the MPs to press for modification to Insurance Law to serve the interests of Kuwaiti women, while improving the condition of Kuwaiti women married to none Kuwaiti men.
