80 pct of power cables damaged
KUWAIT CITY, Sept 27: The working conditions at sites are difficult, but they don’t prevent female Kuwaiti engineers from performing their work adequately, says Head of the Operation Division at Electricity Emergencies Department of the Ministry of Electricity and Water (MEW) Heba Al-Yousif.
Speaking to Al-Anba daily, Al-Yousif said the main reasons for power disruption in the country are high temperatures, and faulty and old cables, and added that “nearly 80 percent of main cables are damaged.” “Once the cables are repaired, 90 percent disruptions will end,” she said, adding “there are plans to repair the cables within the next three years.”
She denied that there was shortage of vehicles required to reach to the problem site, but added that there is a great shortage of engineers in the operation division.
“There are only 15 engineers to cover all the governorates which is very less,” she explained.
Al-Yousif said there are plans to reduce power disruptions by replacing transformers and noted that 404 transformers were repaired this year.
