Alleged kidnappers freed on KD 100 bail Appeals overturns verdict on 7-yr-jail term, deportation
KUWAIT CITY, Sept 20: The Court of Appeals overturned Monday the verdict of a lower court, which had earlier sentenced three men to seven years in jail with hard labor to be followed by deportation for two of the suspects for trying to abduct and rob a Sri Lankan woman.
The court then refrained from imposing the sentence and ordered the release of the suspects on KD 100 bail each.
Case files indicate, the victim was surprised when a vehicle suddenly stopped beside her while she was walking towards her residence. She said the suspects impersonated police and demanded for her civil ID card. When she handed over the card, the suspects forced her into the vehicle. She resisted and fell from the car, and she sustained injuries, which prompted the suspects to flee from the scene. She claimed the suspects took her wallet, which contained an undisclosed amount.
Attorney Mohammad Al-Majdi, who represented two of the suspects in court, raised doubts on the confession of the other suspect, who implicated his clients. He argued the results of the investigations were inconclusive, so he demanded compensation for the psychological and financial damages suffered by his clients due to the wrongful accusation.
