MPs try to gather support for approval of some bills Islamic lawmaker meets 30 colleagues

KUWAIT CITY, Sept 6: Active parliamentary parties are allegedly striving to gather lawmakers to guarantee the required number of lawmakers for the approval of some bills in an attempt to face various government tactics, which succeeded in obtaining the support of parliamentary majority in the previous legislative round, reports Al-Anba daily quoting sources.
Sources said the executive authority’s success in overcoming grilling threats and actually surviving several parliamentary inquests in the past, in addition to the problems encountered by some blocs in trying to win majority support to approve bills, led to a pressing need to study the issue again in preparation for the next legislative round.
Sources added a prominent Islamic lawmaker communicated with 30 of his colleagues, who represent Islamic and conservative streams, during the parliamentary break to lay down a mechanism to guarantee strong coordination on many issues. Sources explained the lawmaker has reached an agreement with several of his colleagues to specify a parliamentary work system for combating corruption and pushing for the implementation of genuine reforms.
Sources said the lawmakers prefer not to announce their alliance to avoid pressure from any party or even other MPs to protect their interests. Sources added the monitoring and coordinating tasks were assigned to the prominent lawmaker.
Meanwhile, discussions on the diwaniya issue resurfaced when MP Shuaib Al-Muwaizri announced his plan to present a proposal on the organization of diwaniyas in the next legislative round, reports Al-Rai daily.
Al-Muwaizri presented the proposal to the Public Utilities Committee after receiving approval from the Legislative and Legal Affairs Committee. He said the Public Utilities Committee prefers to invite the Kuwait Municipality to a meeting to discuss the bill. He affirmed he will closely follow up the issue as the proponent of the proposal, which is aimed at solving the problems of many citizens whose diwaniyas were demolished earlier. He affirmed the proposal was presented to many technical authorities, which presented their views on the bill.
Asserting he is keen on submitting a comprehensive proposal to satisfy all parties, Al-Muwaizri stated the bill includes stipulations on the organization of diwaniyas to ensure they are not established in areas that might affect traffic flow or cover the motorists’ view of the roads.
He argued the establishment of diwaniyas is beneficial to the youth due to its role in supporting social harmony, since diwaniyas are part of the social tradition in Kuwait.
He added the bill will be forwarded to Minister of Public Works and State Minister for Municipality Affairs Dr Fadhel Safar to implement an integrated project to satisfy a number of citizens, who were disappointed over the demolition of their diwaniyas.
