‘Grant citizenship to deserving ones only’ Bloc to monitor military deals

KUWAIT CITY, Aug 29: The Kuwaiti citizenship is not a political paper that anybody can obtain through other channels, said MP Mubarak Al-Khurainej Sunday.

Emphasizing the need to end the haphazard use of the naturalization policy, Al-Khurainej claimed a number of influential people usually use this policy and violate the law to serve personal interests. He clarified he is not against naturalization but the act of granting citizenship to undeserving applicants is totally unacceptable.

Al-Khurainej opined the government knows the real Bedoun, those who hide their nationality and original passport, and those with security restrictions; thereby, posing a grave threat to national security. He appealed to HH the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, HH the Crown Prince Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah and HH the Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser Mohammad Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah to instruct the concerned authority to quickly prepare a list of Bedouns eligible for citizenship.

Sources added several lawmakers have reached an agreement on the need to grant citizenship to 4,000 deserving applicants at the beginning of the next legislative round, according to the report of the parliamentary Interior and Defense Committee. Sources explained the panel recommended the inclusion of military men, those who rendered remarkable service to the nation, and foreign women married to Kuwaitis to the list.

In another parliamentary development, the Development and Reform Bloc will soon announce its priorities in the next legislative round. Sources revealed the bloc will hold a series of meetings after the Eid holidays to finalize its list of priorities, which include the notification draft bill that requires the government to inform the Parliament about any military contract or deal before signing them.
Sources said the bloc is keen on closely monitoring the military contracts in light of the information it had obtained earlier on the purported preparation of huge military deals.

Sources disclosed the bloc will also present other proposals, such as granting additional authority to the Audit Bureau for it to play a more effective role in supervising government agencies, draft legislation to ensure strict supervision over the secret expenditures through a clear-cut mechanism, and grant more civil and social privileges to women.
Meanwhile, MP Dr Faisal Al-Muslim asked the minister of Social Affairs and Labor to verify a news report aired Saturday in Al-Arabia Channel on the alleged entry of 70,000 beggars to the country before Ramadan. He also wants to know the steps taken by the government in this regard.
